Does anybody out there have a good recipe for pasties? I haven't had a good one since I left Yoopercountry.

What is a pastie and where did it originate? I have never heard of them.

A cornish pasty - This is a photo from Wikipedia of a traditional Cornish pasty.
A pasty (or pastie) is a hand held meat pie. It can have potatoes, onions, carrots, rutabagas. They are put into the crust uncooked, then cooked all together. In the United States you find them in the upper penninsula of Michigan, they were brought to this country by Cornish and Welsh immigrants. Traditional lunch box fare for miners. UP of Mich. is known for iron and copper mines.

Gerty, If you are not a Yooper, you should be. You seem to have everything just right. Some of the locals also call it God's Country.

Mmm, pasties. Luckily these days I have a shop right down in the city centre that does pasties for less than £2, but I remember the days when I would make my own at home. They are great, and if you freeze them (Ah! How awful, I know...) they can provide you with easy lunches for weeks. I'd recommend the site http://www.allrecipes.com. Run a search for 'pasties' and all sorts of results will pop up. See which one sounds most like the pasties that you are used to, as the recipes do vary quite a bit. Also a great site for recipes, over all! Hope you find something that work!

I have never had a "pastie" but now I'm curious so thanks for mentioning something NEW that I know nothing about! I also have to agree that http://www.allrecipes.com is just the BEST site to find a recipe for just about anything!

Thank you for your response. When and where did you have your last pastie?

Isn't that a meat pie with rutabagas? I have never made one. I would put onions and mushrooms in mine. Or maybe just eat a bierock.

Bierock - A bierock is a hand held meat pie, brought to the USW by the Germans, find it in Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. In Nebraska they make Runza, which is much like it.
A bierock is German meat pie, hand held. It is usually filled with ground beef, sometimes, cheese, cabbage and onion. We have them at school occasionally. They do not look quite like this picture, but you get the idea. You find them in Kansas. In Nebraska you find Runza, which are much the same.

You have the basic idea right. What's a bierock?

Yah hey, I haven't had a pastie since I was in yooper country along time ago. I'm sure that you can find a recipe on the internet for them, or contact a yooper to get you a good recipe. I personally like the meat pastie, with either ketchup or hot sauce. Good luck aye.

So tlex, where abouts in Yooperland were you? I'm from Crystal Falls. If you ever get some Jalapeno Ketchup it's really good on pasties.
