what do you think about all the diagnosis put on kids these days? It seems that there's an acronym for every behavior... how much is reality? what do you think?

I have raised both a child with bipolar and ADHD and am raising a child with Autism...My children have been dx with a lot of other mental disorders..but I pushed..went for second opinions, learned all I could about the medications and treatments available. I am comfortable with the outcomes of their dx, but it took a few years for me to make sure they were the correct ones. Medication helps...but so does behavioral therapy and structure. I keep all 3 constant and my kids are doing OK... I do belive most children are misdiagnosed at first as parents don't know how to interpet their childs behavior..wrongs medicince can create worse behavior. Be very careful and very pushy about your child's treatment. There is no "one size fits all" approach. And yes..some children who are just naturally high spirited or not properly disciplined are dx with disorders they do not have...Avoid medication and try just a few months of therapy to see what happens...Never ever have your child medicated just to appease a teacher or school...they are not doctors!!

I am so glad to hear that you insisted on having them thoroughly check your children like you did. You rarely hear of parents doing that anymore.
