Christmas tree

Today is Christmas Day when Jesus Christ was born. But one thing that intrigues me often is the Christmas Tree. I have never understood the significance of erecting a christmas tree and decorating with lights. Do anyone of you know the siginifance? I wish you all a merry christmas.

a xmas tree in Mexico - this was the tree they had outside when me and my hubby where in Mexico the beginning on December
I am not sure either but it probably came about so Santa had something to put the presents under
