Can I be witnessing paranormal events?

In the house I've grown up in, there is a full-length mirror at the end of the hallway, at the landing where the stairs come up. Recently, many relatives and friends have admitted to feeling an uneasy feeling while standing at the top of the stairs in front of that mirror. I have never felt this uneasy feeling. However, one day while visiting my mother about 4 years ago, something strange had happened. My son and I had just been in the bathroom, which is the first room by that mirror. I had washed his hands in the sink and were halfway down the stairs, when I heard this strange noise. Then I realized I was hearing water running. The plumbing in my mother's house was not very good, most of it the original plumbing from the late 1800s. I thought a pipe had become disconnected and was spraying water. I ran back up to the bathroom to discover that the faucet was back on, full blast! I turned it back off, I picked up my son and ran down the stairs as fast as I could. I told my husband, I was nearly histerical. He laughed at me and went back up to check it out, but everything was normal.
A few months later, my family moved into an old farmhouse. The previous renters were showing us around. When we got to the 2nd story, they told us a ghost walked that floor, and it never went to the floors below. They only had seen it once, as a dark figure pasing in the hallway. The other times, were just lights going on or off, or the feeling that something had just jumped on their beds. Two months after we moved in, my husband and I had a rare date night. My son was sleeping over at my mother's house. There was one bedroom that we had all of our son's toys in, as a playroom. My husband and I returned from our evening out at around midnight. At 3am, I was awakened by the sounds of one of our son's musical toys. Now, a bomb going off wouldn't wake up my husband, but these soft electronic tunes made him bolt right out of bed! I made him go check it out, while I hid under the covers. He came back and had turned off the toy and he said that it must have been the batteries going dead that caused this.
My husband started a new job that required him to work overnights. A couple of times, I felt that feeling the previous renters described as something jumping on the bed. To me, it felt as if something were sitting at the foot of the bed. I thought it was our cat, but when I turned on the light, nothing was there. I was in the bed alone.
We then had to convert our son's playroom into a nursery, as we were expecting our 2nd child. One evening, I was putting our 8 month old daughter down in her crib. As I entered the room, I could just barely make out a shadow from the corner of my left eye, just behind me. I turned, but could see nothing. Then I realized that the hall light was on behind me, and any shadow I cast, should have been in front of me, not behind as I had just seen. I started to get goosebumps, and then my daughter looked over my shoulder in the direction I had just seen that shadow. I could see her eyes focus on something, and then she smiled and giggled! I then theorized that if she was smiling and giggling, whatever I had seen could not be threatening.
I have not seen much "activity" beyond this, although I don't really go looking for it! I would like to believe that there are ghosts or angels out there. I wish I had more abilties to communicate, but then again, maybe I don't?

Very interesting happenings...and a lot like what goes on at my sister's house. The fact that your daughter saw this and was not scared is good. I would first research a little into the history of the house and the land. And you may be able to communicate. Whenever this happens, simply say hi how are you....of course you probably won't get a verbal answer back, but whatever is there will know that you are trying to communicate. Obviously your child is not threatened by the presence, and neither should you be. Perhaps a kindly old spirit is still there and loving the fact that there is love and children once again in the house it once loved, too. Please let me know if you have any other experiences!...and thanks so much for sharing

Thanks for your reply! I will try to say "hi" the next time I "see" anything. Unfortunatley, it's been a while. My daughter is now 3 years old and we now have a third child, another boy who is 20 months old.
I do get odd feelings every once in a while, but cannot put my finger on the cause.
