Has anyone here caught an Indian inner city train before??

Mumbai Train - This is one of the many stations that I stopped at on my round trip. Always crowded, hot, very little ventilation on the trains themselves.... It is a mad scramble to get on and off the trains when you need to....

My God! I have never experienced anything like it in my life! I can't imagine what it must be like in summer..... I took a round trip of only forty five minutes each way from Churchgate to Vile Parle in Mumbai. Some of the staff here travel up to two or more hours each way on several trains! I don't know how they do it.....

Though I'm an Indian, I've been in the Middle East most of my life. There's no local city trains in the city that I live in. But I know how bad the public transport is. I try not to use it. But when I am forced to, I pick a time when it's not rush hour. Since I don't work outside the home (and when I did, I stayed very close to my workplace...I would walk and get my daily dose of exercise), I don't have to suffer the bad public transport in India. No air conditioning is something I can manage...but the crowd...uggh! And all the creeps travelling along with me..just waiting to grope...drives me mad just thinking about it.

Yes. In hindsight I wish I had of done that as I bought a second class ticket! If I do catch a train again I will definitely upgrade my ticket!

yes. You are right. There are many reasons for the local train travel to be horrible. Population growth is main reason. Further the trains are not air conditioned like in foreign countries.

I am here for a year on an employment visa.... I am doing everything I can to ensure that I find an apartment close enough to work to not have to catch a train! It's not easy!
