It's really not a holiday in the United States, either, but most people don't work on Sunday (not me, I work on Sundays a lot of the time). It used to be that everyone used to close down their stores and businesses in respect for the Christian sabbath. Also, sometimes, the community would get upset if they saw someone working on that day. I think it was against the law to work on Sunday at one time in some places.
But, nowadays, since a lot of people are either not Christian or consider another day of the week their "sabbath day", more businesses stay open now.
