I'm guilty of over indulging on goodies durring this time of the year. I have been saying I'm going to get back into tip top shape and greatly desire to do so. I know the basics for losing is eating well balanced meals and exercising at least 20 mins a day. I would like to to more areobics but I'm so uncorinated. I can't stand lunges or any type of exercises that you have to bend your knees because they pop. Any suggestions on what you find best is appreciated.

there are three basics.
walk.
situps.
pushups.
If you can ensure that you do these everyday you are halfway there. even if you dont loose weight you wont put on any and will definitly look fitter and more firm. also you dont have to do any crazy number 30 mins of walk with 20 of the other two will do the trick.
anything further you do will be a bonus.
also you could try some yoga basic stretching poses. the make you flexible and have innumerable benifits. a book which explains what the benefit of each pose is all you need.

I'm with you. I would like to lose weight, however, I can't seem to get motivated to do what it takes. I walk or ride a bike. Turn on some music and just go.

I didn't gain any weight over the holidays. There's no rule that said I had to eat a bunch of stuff that wasn't healthy for me.

I have heard of a great website called Sparkpeople.com. This site is free, has tons of advice, can help you to track your calorie intake, etc. I have put on about 15 lbs in the last 2-3 months. I know, that is horrible. But I'm hoping to get back on track on 1/1/07 too. Good luck to you & me too! :-)

Oh yeah, I totally blew the diet thing this past week. And we're not done celebrating yet, I have more functions this weekend!!
I have had some success using ediets.com for giving me recipes to use for my meals. I also walk 2-3 miles MOST mornings around my neighborhood. I've just bought some Melaleuca Access bars and I'm hoping they help too - they're supposed to burn fat while you exercise... We shall see!!!!
Good Luck to you!

my biggest thing with getting out to walk is I have to take my daughter. This means the weather has to be permitted. I don't like going to the mall to walk because I want things I see in the windows and I have to burn gas to get there. Ugh...excuses excuses. I'm full of them.

Yes, motivation is a big part!! I didn't walk this morning because it was raining, so although it's free, I can't always do it.

I am a long time professional trainer so here are some quick tips that DO work ...
1. Strenght train with weights. 3 sets for each body part - 3 sets each excercise - 10 reps
2. Train with weights minimum 3 times per week.
3. Do cardio atleast 3 times per week between 30 and 45 minutes.
4. Eat smaller portions.
5. Make an effort to eat better foods.
6. Remember everything in moderation.
Weight training has an added benefit once you are done working out. Every little bit of muscle you add will make you body burn more calories throughout the day. Cardio will not do this for you. So you must mix both into your fitness regiment.
Good Luck!

We will be getting this new box flex machine in the next few weeks. It recomends 3 days of weights then one off. What confuses me about this by the time you get back the first original muscles trained it's been 5 days.I guess this is the body building rotation but I'm used to working them every other day 6 days. Can you tell me the diffrence? I don't want bulk just lean toned muscles. Thanks for the heads up.

Do not worry about bulking up. Unless you are shooting steroids you will not bulk up. Trust me on this one. It is not in your bodies physiology. Just use the machine and workout smart. Get active. The rotation you were mentioning is ok but I would stick to a 3 on 1 off rotation. Good luck. If you need more info just let me know.

You should get an air glider or gazelle machine as there is no stress on your knees or legs and you burn a lot of calories in a short period of time. It is very good for the heart and you will lose weight quickly if you use it at least 25 minutes a day and diet properly.

Well since October I have been on a doctor restricted high protein low carb diet, he said he did not expect me to do as well during the holidays but try and maintain or lose one or two pounds. I will know how well I did come Thursday, I am afraid I might have gained though I was sick for almost a week and could not eat much. So hopefully I did not gain and maybe lost a couple more lbs. So far up until the 11th of December I had lost 22 lbs. I will be getting back on track with the diet more strictly again though and starting my low impact ball exercises again. Which have really helped as well.

Just about is the Key word my dear.I have developed heel spurs . When i was pregnant working 12 hours nonstop at a hospital it became soooo difficult. I spent over $900.00 dollars to just ease my pain. You don't know pain till you have inflamed tendons in your legs and feet and it criples you to walk.

I too have put on some weight lately so I know what you mean. Try yoga or pilates for exercise alternatives. Both yoga and pilates are core strength training, increase flexibility and stimulate weight loss. Both are also low stress resistance types of workouts. They allow you to go at your own pace and you aren't pressured to push yourself any further than you truely think your body is capable of. They are wonderful ways to exercise. I enjoy them both!

I starting to think it's the only thing to do. I've tried so many nonsensical diets and such over the corse oe the last 10 years and man, does physical activity beat all. It speeds up the motabolisim as well as eating less food more times a day. Eat 5-6 small meals rather than 2 huge meal. your body works faster to break it down and it burns the calories instead of storing it. i know what to do I just need the pick me up to do it:)

Technically, the holidays aren't over until next Tuesday. So, let's just keep on eating until then. Deal? And remember, the weight did not go on over night and it willnot come off over night. Be healthy in your diet and get some exercise.

I have a stationary bike that I love to use. It's great for me because I have had surgery on both knees, and it takes the strain off of them. I have also found that I burn more calories biking than when I do aerobics or walking. Another low impact cardio machine that I love is the Elliptical Machine (sort of a cross between a ski and stair machine). You can go forwards or backwards and really feel it working different muscle groups while you are getting in your cardio. Not to mention, it's fun. I have a small gym area set up in my garage and have mounted a TV on the wall out there. In the evening, when I want to sit down and watch TV, I go get on the bike or elliptical machine instead. Watching my favorite shows makes the time fly by!

Have you thought of yoga? It's challenging but there are enough different levels that you don't have to do anything that's too hard. That's what I do & I love it!!!

I totally understand about the indulging over the holidays. Well I say to heck with it and start over fresh (New Years resolution). Again, you say me New Years resolution is to lose the weight and do this and do that. Alot of which we will never do. But honestly I do TRY to promise myself to do at least 20-30 situps a day and I MIGHT loose the buldge. But if not maybe the following year HUH. LOL :0)
