Should the posting of jokes as 'discussions' be against the rules?

I am not against jokes in essence - a few of them are quite funny - but just posting a joke is not really starting a discussion.
Do you think MyLot should ban this kind of 'discussion' or should they have a separate area for it where postings are not paid?

I think most jokes are not really appropriate..but that is my opinion and others may feel otherwise. +

I agree that some are in rather bad taste and don't really have a place here or anywhere. Of course, most people posting jokes are simply copying them from one of the thousand of joke sites or from emails they get sent and pasting them in. There is certainly no attempt to start a discussion. What can one 'reply' to a joke? "Ha ha!" or whatever or respond with another copy/paste.
I think that it tends to lower the quality and reputation of MyLot.

Yes, there should be a little bit of Mylot specifically for jokes and riddles and games. I'd personally like Mylot to stay as a serious q and a site, I know some of my questions seem daft to some people, but they are my general ponderings and real questions that I really want the answers too. Even though I post daft questions, I wouldn't actually post a joke or anything here, it just doesn't seem appropriate.

I agree with you, xxmeganxx. Posting jokes simply invites people merely to post other jokes and it is very easy simply to copy and paste them from elsewhere. Not only that, but there are people who are going from discussion to discussion just pasting the same joke time and again.
Both things violate the Guidelines.

the very purpose of crating a discussion, posting replies and making it grower is to cultivate the habit of increasing the knowledge/sharing the knowledge of others and +++ many other benefits.
If a joke is made for discussion , then this will become a fun matter and no good responses will come out and the total effort of the motivator fails
better avoid jokes

I do not think mylot should be paying anyone for jokes they copy and paste from some other site and fail to give credit to where they found the joke. The member did not write the joke in their own words, they generally do not construct a discussion around the joke they use. It is just a joke they find somewhere online. It is unoriginal, and therefore should not earn payment.
Now, if someone wants to construct a discussion and then add a relevant joke they find online to enhance it, sure as long as they mention that they found this joke somewhere else.
The reason I have a big issue with those that start a discussion with a joke they find somewhere online, is that anyone can do this. Anyone can sit here and continuously copy and paste a joke they didn't write themselves. Why should mylot pay them to cheat like that? I feel it is another way to scam on mylot. Many of the ones that are doing this are also the ones that have poll and survey type discussions, or copy and pasted copyright infringed articles. They are cheating.

I agree. It is one thing to use a joke to illustrate a discussion; quite another to post a joke for its own sake. In a chat room it would be acceptable. MyLot is NOT a chat room!

if the joke is posted in a discussion and is linked to the discussion then i think its fine, otherwise, i dont think discussions should be started JUST for jokes =/ isnt against the mylot rules or is it just me?

I fully agree, Grace. A joke posted as a valid response to a discussion or to illustrate the point of an argument is absolutely fine. What soon palled after about the third one I saw like it is jokes posted (well, cut and pasted, more like) just as a joke to which there is no logical answer but another joke. I can get that sort of entertainment at any pub or party.

I never quite know what to say to make a discussion out of a joke. I think that if the person uses a joke as a springboard to a topic and then follows it with questions about the point the joke makes, it might be okay. But these people who just sit and copy joke books should be banned from doing so. That's so boring, and I gave up trying to answer them a long time ago.

That is more or less where I am coming from, too. If one wants jokes (and most of us do from time to time), there are plenty of joke sites, not to mention the emails that most of us get from friends.
If I go to a hardware store, I don't expect there to be a meat counter!

I don't mind jokes which encourage a discussion, like maybe if you use a jole and elaborate such as saying a "bonde" joke and asking if blondes really are that dumb(although that example wouldn't be very good because that question has been asked too many times. But you know what I mean)
I don't think it should be allowed if people are going to put a joke on just to put a joke and there is going to be no discussion of it, unless you discuss how funny it is and why but that's just silly. Maybe there could be a seperate section like they have on some other sites, or maybe if someone has got so many jokes they want to put them on here, they could start up their own forum or something, I think having jokes on this kind of site, even in a seperate section, isn't really a good idea. I mean, I have seen certain other sites where they have clearly had a "jokes" section and insults have flown around because there have been too many people ready to insult before they even realise that the section is for jokes.

Now I feel somewhat guilty for posting the jokes I have posted. I do enjoy a good joke and love to share them. Perhaps if MyLot did not want us to post them for earnings, they could offer us the option of posting without gaining points. I for one would still be posting even if there were no earnings to be had. Laughter is the best medicine.

Oh, don't feel guilty, Butterfly! It was just an idea I had. It seems that about half are for it and half are against. It's not against the rules and nor was I suggesting that we should all go around po-faced as a hamster's bottom!

why should they remove jokes? everytime i have a bad moment i like to read some and feel a little better. it's true that humor and taste are debatable things, but i'm sure there is a little something to cheer everyone up.

No I don't think so. I have heard some good jokes that I want to share with others. Sometimes I'm not in a very good mood and I see a joke that that really perks me up.

I think a separate area for jokes would be a good idea as they're not really discussions and, unless you're looking for different punchlines, once they're answered the discussion ends.

I think that a discussion on different jokes is fun and acceptable. It gives people something to laugh over and they can reply with their own as well. If everything gets put on a "not allowed" list, soon their won't be anything left to talk about. If you don't like jokes, simply don't read the thread. That's my take on it.

Yes, because 99% of the time they joke is copied from somewhere else, plus it's not a discussion anyways.

Not really, infact jokes can be shared across various regions and some light humor on mylot should not hurt anyone

Well if the joke pertains to a topic, they wish to further discuss that would seem reasonable. But I have seen way too many that are only posting jokes and nothing else and well to be honest, I think they do seem to take up space and time for those of us looking for a really good post to discuss. I like the idea of maybe having a joke only section separate from the discussion boards. Maybe you can send that to them for consideration. MyLot may take you up on it.
Good Idea!
