What Defines A Soulmate?

I see many posting about someone who mistreats them but then in the same post they call them their soulmate. I have trouble considering that a jerk is my soulmate unless I am a jerk also...it just doesn't make much sense to me.
Soulmates don't have to be romantic interests but they do have to be someone with whom you are connected to for a reason, I just don't think that would be someone who mistreats or abuses you.
How do you define "soulmate"?

In my opinion, soulmate is the one who you love and love you back with no condition, two hearts become one and never been appart till the rest of life even there are lot of conlict happen. Side by side in good or bad, in happiness or sorrow.
