Identity Theft - Who's been a victim?

My wallet was stolen in 2001 and I'm just now receiving bills from credit collection agencies where these people took out utilities in my name. They weren't able to open credit cards, because my debt ratio was already so high (which is an interesting blessing) - I have had an extremely hard time trying to get any cooperation from the police, because they are not required to file any kind of report, but Identity theft is labeled as one of the fastest growing crimes. Have you ever been a victim? If so, what difficulties did you have along the way? But most of all, was the culprit ever caught and if so, what happened to him/her?

most time the culprit is not caught, and you have to do all the work yourself. but you are not liable to pay anything, just check you credit and call the collection agancies and xplain you have never set up any of these accounts. you should also put a block on your credit so people can't open new accounts without credit companies talking to you and verifying that it really is you.
