Hi,
Hello,
Windows registry is a database where pointers and important settings of all programs are stored. Pointers are used for accessing resources where settings are used for controlling the performance, centrally. Most of the programs take help of the registry system which exists only during the time when the Operating System is running. When you remove a program from your system, the registry entries stays. Over time the registry too gets fragmented and needs defragmentation. Registry files can not be defragmented with the help of windows in built registry defragmenter. In ordinary defragmentation the green, immovable files that you see are the registry files. There are freeware registry defragmenter for this.
Why don't you read http://www.bukisa.com/articles/358172_understanding-windows-registry for more information. Windows registry is a labyrinth and there is so many things to explore.
Thanks.
God bless you.
