when you went up to the machine you noticed two $100 bills sitting in the compartment where the deposit envelopes are atored? Would you take the money and leave? Would you leave it there? This has happened to me several times at this same location. I wanted to take the money but I didn't as something didn't feel right about it and it was not a great area to be in. Somebody put it there for a reason but why?

I wouldn't take it, I would feel bad, you could call the ATM number that I think is on the machine and report it, I know there are security camera's so they would know if you took it and it could be conterfeit or something.

This sounds soo very fishy to me..There was deff soemthing wrong with the money..it was probably fake..there is no way someone would leave it there..once maybe by mistake..but not more than that,, They could have anthrax for all u know.although in all honesty.. i think i would have taken the money..i know its dishonest but im barely getting by as is..but if i saw it happene again i think i would put it in an envelope and take it to the police station..and maybe let them deal with it..maybeee.....lol..

you think ssomebody put it there for a reason? i mean, yes the reason is they are careless with their money, if i will be given a chance, i'd get the money. this happens only once in a lifetime.... i really have to be honest on this.. if i don't know who is the owner, finders keepers.

I WOULD CONTACT SOMEONE AT THE BANK AND ADVISE THEM ABOUT THE MONEY NO I WOULD NOT TAKE IT IT DID NOT COME OUT OF MY ACCOUNT THEREFORE ITS NOT MINE TO TAKE.
PREHAPS IT WAS PLACED THERE TO SEE WHAT ATM USERS WOULD DO BUT AT ANY RATE I WOULD LET SOME IN THE BANK KNOW WHAT I FOUND AND WHERE IT WAS FOUND AND THEN NOTIFY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ABOUT THIS AS WELL.TAKING IT WOULD MEAN YOU ARE STEALING

They probably put it there to see how many people would actually take it. If you've seen it there many times before, obviously it was done on purpose. Probably some sort of set up, or game. Who knows.

I honestly would have left it there unless the bank was open and then I would have taken it into the bank. Most ATM's have camera's and they can tell who would have taken the money. Who knows why people do what they do as far as leaving the money there. Just listen to your gut though.

I surely wouldn't leave the money ..I would put it in an envelope and wait to see if there were any notices put in newspapers for missing money..I might even post in the newspaper that I found some money..If the persons who lost it could tell me how much I would return it..If no one would claim it..I would say it's a gift from God?+

some people do things like that as a gift to others so you never know somebody might have left it there with a big ole bank account and thinking somebody really could use it or then again somebody could have left it by mistake. If it was me i think i would leave it there.

During business hours or non-business hours?
If this is something that has happened repeatedly, you may want to notify the bank.
The other option would be to put it in a deposit envelope and drop it in the deposit box or the mail slot through the bank's door. Then address your concern with the bank when they are open next.
Good for you not taking the money. But I have to say, I don't think that everyone after you would not be as honest. Thus, putting it in the envelope and giving it back to the bank may be the best option.
It is possible that a teller puts it with the envelopes when the person goes to fill them. In hopes of coming back later and getting these bills when the bank is closed. If you leave these bills and it has happened on several occasions, it would seem the person is getting away with it. A bank would not purposely put it there for it to be stolen in the hopes to lure out theives.
But I would certainly bring it to the bank's attention.
Great discussion! I would like to hear about the outcome should you notify the bank!!!

It happened during nonbusiness hours but I have no idea how long the money had been sitting there and there were people there before me and nobody picked it up either. Thank you for the suggestion as I will contact them and let them know about this situation.

I would take the money out of the atm machine and return it to the bank. I would put it in a deposit envelope with a note explaining where I found it and when (date/time). I would also sign my name and leave my phone number if they needed to call me for some reason. Maybe it was accidental that someone left the money? Who knows, but returning it is the right thing to do.

I have never heard of cops placing money at an ATM to catch theives.
This happens in Canada? They sit there and stake the 200 bucks left?
What if a person picks it up to try to put it back in the bank's deposit slot? Then what? Are they out 200 bucks until the next day?
Wow. Never heard of police doing this!

I would have thought that it was illegal for the police to deliberately tempt people into committing a crime. Here in the United Kingdom it would be classed as entrapment, and would be a very serious offence.
The purpose and duty of the police force is to uphold the law, not to try to persuade innocent people into breaking the law in order to arrest them.

you cant take that money. you could be easily traced out not only by camera. but, from the currency numbers also.you should just inform the security guys to take care of that or you should inform the bank people to take it & handover the same to the concerned person.

to be honest - I would be soo tempted as I need the money in depserate ways - but I am also honest in saying I would take the money to a teller and let them know I found it at the ATM. If it were I that left $$ there - I would be greatful if someone turned it in.

It happened once to my friend; he went to the ATM and there was 300$ that came out, without him doing any transaction. He tried to see if the previous customer was still there, but they had left already. He took the money and kept it. I don't know what i would've done. But i know that once i forgot 40$ in an enveloppe in an ATM, i went back not even 5 minutes ago, and it was gone.

To be honest, the money belongs to somebody and I would not even consider keeping it. The owner might be worse off than I am and a bit careless with money - just like myself. Here in Ireland, the name of the bank is up over the machine, so I would take it to the bank at my first opportunity and let them keep it until the rightful owner claims it.
