Hi, I was diagnosed bipolar about 6 years ago, I have been on a variety of medications over the years. I was 130 when I began on meds and now sadly I am 220 (I just lost 15 pounds) Many medications have side effects of weight gain, some of them trigger your appetite center and compel you to eat. Over the years I have worked with by GP and Psych. to help me lose, I am on seroquel now a low dose of 100mg with other meds -- but I am more active now then I have been so the weight is coming off although sllllowwwllly - I have a good loving support system of people who help me through rough times -- I just have to stay conscience of what I eating, why I'm eating, when I eating -- New diet which is working: No breads, no sweets except 1 piece of Choc. each night, No sodas, NO EATING AFTER 6PM at night (I think this is the one that has really helped) along with no EATING BETWEEN MEALS - I don't eat a meal, I don't get it and I don't get to make it up either -- Simple - but it must be working I've lost 15 pounds in 8 weeks -- now I'm getting ready to put in a reg. excercise - I'll proably start with walking. Keep loving your sister bipolar is hard enough without feeling bad about "getting fat" -- I wish her all the best. :)

I haven't had this problem with seroquel, but I have from some of my other bipolar medications. If she is on an antidepressant or a mood stabilizer these could make her gain weight. The best thing to do is to ask her doctor.
