I have had a lot of patients who are bipolar. Most do well with meds. and psychological therapy. The meds. take getting used to, as most of them cause side effects, especially in the beginning as your body gets used to them. Be honest with the doctor who is prescribing them and make him work with you to find the medication that will work on you with the least amount of side effects possible. Most places offer both individual and group counseling; both are helpful. Remember that this is an illness; many people try to stigmatize someone with a mental illness, but you need to always know that it is no different from any other chronic disease. It can be treated and managed, and you will once again be feeling more like "yourself".
Good Luck

Yes, I do. My mother, my sisters and myself. I don't take the meds, they make me feel worse. I've tried to control my mood swings by leaving the situtation that upsets me rather than screaming at the top of my lungs. Well, first I ask myself...WILL THIS MATTER TOMORROW? NEXT WEEK? If the answer is no, then I just keep it to myself. IT's VERY hard sometimes, VERY hard. But, it sure has made life more enjoyable.
Good luck Sweetie!

My sister in law says her daughter has it but refuses to take the medicine because they make her feel bad. And I think my sisters daughter has it because she has very bad mood swings can be loving one second and terrify you the next but she won't take her meds either they need to do something about that maybe something installed in the arm that gives the meds at a controlled period of time like they have with birth control devices.
