Do you feel that we as American spend too much at Christmas?

I wonder with all the mass marketing that attacks us before Christmas do we spend to much of our hard earned money? I have made it a habit to buy my kids a Savings Bond every Christmas for their future education as we are not well of. In doing so I wonder if spent less and saved more at Christmas how big of a effect it would have on our financial state in the future.

Well, I can't speak for other Americans but we sure did. We set a budget of $500 for our two girls and we went over by about $200. Some of it was on extra shipping fees and one of the gifts was a swing set for our new house from Santa but still. It was a lot!
To compensate, my husband and I don't spend any money on valentines day or on our anniversary. It was actually my idea once I realized that even though we are crazy about each other, we didn't care for those mushy holidays.

Yes, specially for the people who all ready have or barely making it every month. Tell don't bother, not to be rude or the grich. But put money away for a rainy day.

I agree my girls asked for both of them and I said no way. It bothered me enough that people were being shot while standing in line to buy one. This is not the message I want to send to my kids that a game station is worth being mugged or hurt for. It is just not realistic anymore. They have a PS2 and never play it. I just can not see paying for it.
