Compare LCD and CRT monitors for PC and TV

I have read in many places that CRT pc monitors are better in color contrast when compared to LCD monitors. That is the main reason CRT prevailing despite the fact that LCD monitors emits less radiation and consume less electricity and space. Then how come LCD TV’s are considered far superior than the old TV? Are they different technology? Is television sets require lesser color details? What is the reason behind this shift when it comes to TV from PC?
