I like the old stuff, Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory, etc., it was so different that other music of the era. I didn't care for some of his later stuff like Let's Dance (too pop-y for me). I really enjoyed Reality though.
What do you all think are his best CDs to get? I actually don't own any.

I have all his albums (on vinyl) and my fave is Aladdin Sane. I can listen to that album over and over and never get sick of it.
Suggestions: Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory, The Man who Sold the World - I would say just listen to them all and buy the ones you like - he's got so many!

I like the collectional album that came out in 2005 (or so I believe it did LOL). Reasons why is because it had his older songs with the newer songs involved. I just love his voice, what a wonderful voice he has!

I like his older music. My favorite album is his greatest hits with Ziggy Stardust, Space Oddity, Changes etc. That was classic music. Of course I do have a soft spot for one song he did that isn't on there. A duet he did with Bing Crosby for a Christmas special. They sang "Little Drummer Boy". It was beautiful.

Definitely Hunky Dory.
With supersongs like 'Andy Warhol' and 'The bewlay brothers'. But also don't forget 'Life on mars' and 'Kooks'. Fanastic album, classic!!

Again so hard to choose, love pretty much every album he's made.
Not too sure about some of the newer ones, but............
Oh I loved that glass spider track just because it was so dramatic.
Would have so loved to see that tour!!

Old post, but I like the question. I think answering this question is almost as difficult as naming a favorite Beatles album. They're all so different and great. And sometimes one album works better than another based on what mood I'm in. But I do think The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars will always hold a special place in my heart since it was the first full album of his I heard. And its got such a great unity to it. Very easy to listen to start to finish.

Bowie at the Beeb (his performances for BBC radio). There is a version of "Let's Dance" on there that makes my heart melt.

The only full album I have of his is "Reality." But I love how his songs tend to be on the poetic/metaphorical side thus leaving them open to many different interpretations. He has great versatility, and seeing any artist progress through the years is a fascinating thing.
