$100.00 Hand cranked Computers

United States

Nope, it's not a typo! For those of you who haven't seen this yet, check out the link! Could you imagine having a laptop computer that folds in different directions to serve as a laptop, a book, etc? And, they run on hand cranked power at about half the speed of our laptops today. For developing countries this would be a huge milestone! Children, as you'll read in the article, could get an even better education and there are so many other possibilities to having them. They may eventually be available to the public, but initially, they'll be for the purpose I've mentioned. Would you buy one? What do you think of open source software? Post your answers!

What a novel idea. This could open up a whole new world to many you could not afford the luxury of owning a pc.

Absolutely! I agree. I just think it's so cool and the fact that the guy who invented it wants it to remain with open source software! Too cool. Thanks for your post.

I always think it's cool when technology is evolving. I would probable invest in something like this for my kids to help them with their school work if need be.

I have seen radios that crank so I guess a computer could be used that way too. That should be interesting. Maybe they will start making regular computers that have a crank so that if the electricity is zapped in the middle of your session you can give it a crank so it can be shut down safely without losing your input on it. You never know what will be next.

Thanks for your posted link. I'd like to buy one laptop, but I am worried about its shipping to my country. Many people haven't got laptops from their relatives in the past.

Thanks for your post. I can understand your concern about not receiving the laptop you would purchase. I'm not sure what provisions will be put in place to assure people will receive the laptops you purchase, but if I hear anymore, I'll update it here on this discussion and send you a message direct.

Yup, I agree! It should be interesting to watch this one unfold. I'm so excited for the countries who don't have much money or electricity. What a unique opportunity.
