This is a case of hysteria or mental illness. People feel frightened some time and due to ignorance and superstition, there are still people who believe it. In India, there are thousands of villages and thousands of witchcraft stories are available and there people are practicing like using brookstick, earthen pot, treeleaves etc. swining violently. All cock and bull story.

In South Kanara (Coastal region on western coast), the houses are all scattered and rarely one would see in a row. One in the valley, one on uphill, one on slope, one on flatland etc. This was done to look after their lands and invariably the hutments/houses are built near their land. Since it is hilly area, there is lot of lonliness. When they meet some in the morning, the discussion is about devils and witchcraft. Every house has a story about witchcrafts and devils. They spend a lot of money at temple, praying god to protect them from these!!!

Rich people spend millions of rupees in performing rites to the demon gods and it is watched by thousands of villagers for2 to 3 days. These activities take place in South Kanara District and North Canara Districts of Karnataka, India.
