Spain and skinny models

Has anyone heard about Spain passing a law about a weight loss minimum for models? If you are below a certain weight you can not model on the runways of Spain. http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=entertainment&id=4566898 I am torn by this, are they violating human rights and discriminating by telling women they can not have thier bodies as they want them or is this a step ahead in society in general. It is time to say super thin is not only unrealistic but unhealthy and impossible for most average consumers to achieve without risking anorexia. Personally I think Marilyn Monroe was gorgeous. She was far from being skinny! Curvy 'and' Se*xy. Which models can we say that about in this day and age?

i really dont understand why they brought about such a ban. Being thin doesnt really make a person weak or unhealthy.. i am myself under the BMI range... its not because i am starving or something.. actually i eat a lot and i am quite strong compared to the girls of my age here.. so i personally think being thin has nothing to do with one's health.. if u starving for becoming thin, it is something else... and yeah Marilyn Monroe was really gorgeous.

They do allow for models who are under the average BMI. Of course there are healthy people who fall below the average... that is what makes it "average". My sister, like you, has a lower BMI than most and she is quite healthy and strong. The limit that was set by the Spanish fashion industry is very low... skinny models are still allowed, just not starving models.

it is a smart move for Spain. because most models live unhealthy lifestyle to maintain their figure. some resorts to purging just to have that skinny look. i've also heard that Tyra Banks is making a move to help change people's perspective about how a model should look by hiring "plus" size models to show that voluptuous figures can also walk the runway. anyways, cheers to Spain! It saved a lot of young aspiring girls from being anorexic. Skinny figure doesnt always mean that you look beautiful. =)

Disgustingly skinny - Disgustingly skinny
No, this is not violating human rights. It is really good that they do this, it will help young women and aspiring models to not become anorexic or bulimic. The models today are waaaaay too skinny, they're only skin and bones and are disgusting to look at! I think all the countries should do that. If you ask me, curvy will always be better than skinny!

Considering we recently had a model die from Anorexia, I have no problem with this law. Eating disorders, bulimia and anorexia are a staple in the world of modeling. Models often do not look like the women in the real world. I say this is a good step.

I applaude this. It is not discriminating. They are doing it because they sre finally trying to set an example.Young girls teens are starving themselves to be just like those models, and like the ones on the covers of magazines. What they don't realizeIs how much they are touched up.Cindy Crawford said it best "Even I don't wake up looking like Cindy Crawford".

I agree that they should put a limit on how thin they can be. It;s unattractive to look so thin plus it is so unhealthy. Look at Tyra, she not skinny and she's beautiful.

I hadn't heard of the law but I don't think that it is violating human rights at all. There are many professions from which one is disallowed on physical grounds, purely because your physique doesn't suit the job. There is no doubt that what some people see on the catwalk is how they desire to look, too, and that trying to become as skinny as those models is damaging to many people's health (as well as to their self-esteem). There are too many women who are ashamed of their bodies simply because what they see in the mirror is nothing like the goddesses in the fashion magazines and there have been a number of cases of anorexia which have been solely due to women (often young girls) over-dieting without medical advice because they wish to achieve the impossible dimensions of a Barbie Doll.

I have heard about this and I think it is great. This image of super skinny is crazy and I think it is a bold move for the Spanish designers to stand up and say this is not a good look for young girls to see.Kudos to them

Well i thought it was only Italy who passed the law banning too-thin models. i guess thats a good news. with all the young girls iconing them and craving for the thin look, i say its very bad for their health. i think all countries should pass this law. the young girls should be encouraged for a healthy body and not a morbid model-like look.

I did hear about this and I also heard that some other places were not going to practice this. One person commented on tv that the models just had high metabolisms or were young and skinny by nature rather than from being too underweight. I think that the law was meant to protect models though, rather than violate their rights. There are so many models starving out there to save their spot on the runway. In perspective-I was told at 15 that I was the perfect weight for modeling at 5'9 1/2 and 112 lbs. I did that for awhile but now I am still thin, but healthier at 130 (4 kids later!) I was really too skinny at 112 with a BMI of under 18 I think

.......skinny fashion - a skinny model
i think it's just. recently there have been news of several deaths due to anorexia and bulimia. the models are concentrating on being skinny and in the process neglecting their health. weight loss has to be done with keeping BMI in mind and it is pretty much scientfic. even i am a great fan of Marilyn Monroe, i think she is the ultimate diva. thank you for the post.

I think it is a good thing coz I do not belive that they will set the limit that high. i think they will look at in in a healthy way so therfor this for me is a thing in the right direction.

I personally applaud Spain for taking this step. I've seen several pictures, and watched one runway show on tv. These women, these poor women are sickly looking--yet they, and so then others?, think they look sexy and attractive? NO! Let's put an end to this. You know there's a cult of "Annie" (I'm not sure how it's spelled, but it's a bunch of young people who are proud to be anorexic.) Pretty twisted.

Yeah i have heard this news in news papers but i dont htinki ts right. Skinny models can look beautiful i ndifferant clothes. I have seen girls as young as 16 yrs in modelling and you dont expect a girl of 16 with huge figures. I think its wrong and other contries are not looking to adopt this type of rules. Cheers, Tutul

We are not talking about just skinny here. We are talking about people with almost 0% body fat. That is not beautiful whether you are 16 or 60.

Yes I have heard about this..... I too am somewhat torn I guess but I mainly think that it is commendable that they are finally prepared to show realistic women on the catwalk rather than a body type that is owned by the tiniest percentage of women worldwide. It creates stigmas and unrealistic targets for young women. Beauty comes from within anyways!

Having a niece with an eating disorder makes me want to cheer this decision. Very few models are "naturally" that skinny and have to go through excessive dieting to look that way. I see this a a healthy move in the right direction.
