Is life worth living?

We're born. We breathe, move, feed, and mate. We die.
What's the point?
Some become illustrious by contributing to sciences, art, or literature, but most humans who have ever lived never achieved anything that marked our civilisations for the posterity. Or some did but were never recognised.
So I'd like you to give me your point of view on life. Do you think it's worth it, or is it some meaningless random agitation before returning to the void and oblivion?

Maybe we are living life after life until such time as we attain spiritual enlightenment and therefore earn the right to proceed to a higher plane? Maybe it is all a test of worthiness? As for ending up in void and oblivion.... I hope there is more to life than that! Life ain't easy, I would like to think that we eventually reach something perfect!

Very well said James. I have often heard people say that life isn't worth living. I tell them it is how they choose to live it that decides if it is worthy or not.

No you won't Thomas. You will be so awestruck that you won't do or say anything. You will be in the presence of the Almighty, holy and Everlasting God and He will have the FINAL say.
Call me all the names you like, by the way!
Jesus loves you still!

Yes, life is worth living. At least, that is my hypothesis. It is only a hypothesis because how can we prove it one way or the other?
I further suspect that we humans do not know the secret of life and why it is worth living because we do not have the intellectual capacity to understand it. Consider this point analagous to an ant understanding calculus. The ant just can't do it. I suspect life is just as complicated to us.
There is another hypothesis. I do not like to think about it, much less talk about it. It concerns why God really loves us, cares for us, and will never let man perish.
Since I do not like to talk about it, I'll just tell you about the cartoon that gave me this awful inspirational clue as to a possible true understanding of our relationship with the creator.
A young boy is on a farm sitting on a fence that surrounds a barn yard. In the barn yard are two hogs. There is a young hog and an old hog.
The old hog is telling the young hog all about how great life is what with all the food, sows, and leasure time they have.
The young boy says," Wow, look at all the pork chops and bacon!"
The young hog asks the old hog," What's pork chops and bacon?"
The old hog remains silent.

Glad you liked the cartoon. After posting it I was afraid someone might take it seriously I thought God was raising us for harvest and slaughter.
Of course, as far as I know, everyone else did think I meant that!

Its obvious, the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is 42. Without life there is nothing. With life, there is everything.
Either we have been put on Earth for a purpose, or we live in a random but totally pointless existence. There probably is not enough space on MyLot to get involved in the Theological &/or Athiestic debate that answering this question really requires.
In other words I don't know, however many people do want to leave their mark on society and to be remembered long after they have departed, including our beloved leader (Tony Blair) who is desperate to leave us all a legacy to mark the absolutely wonderful time he has enjoyed as prime Minister.

To me life means to experience much as you can. It mean to strive and excel despite, the fact that it may seem uncomfortable. I believe we are here to pass through our individual journey gracefully, and learning to be the best person you can be, without judging others. I know life can be hard. Believe me, I have really had my share of hard knocks along the way. I have battled what does it all me? Especially when receiving one blow after the other. I guess it becomes our responsibility to deal with it, and hopefully enlighten our minds, and being wise and listening to that inner voice which in turn will hopefully lead to the direction were meant to go. However, these experiences, I believe ultimately are meant to lead us to evolve into God’s perfect plan. Once we achieve that we will then experience heaven. We all have heaven in us, but it is just a matter of us opening ourselves into it and allowing ourselves to receive it. What makes it difficult is when you keep running into different things, which makes it difficult to achieve that ultimate goal. We live in a world that is destructive, hurtful, self- oriented, and other false things before heaven. Hopefully with that knowledge, it will helps us better understand the meaning of life, and its ultimate plan. Very good posting.

I believe that life is worth living. Life and happiness is what you make of it. We are all put here for some reason, and we have to make the most of our opportunities on this earth. I believe that by setting goals, achieving goals, and in some way touching the life of someone else in a positive way each and every day that I am fulfilling God's plans for me on earth. As for what comes afterwards, I'm not sure... I can only speculate that the afterlife is affected by what we do and accomplish in our life on earth. If we live life well and appreciate every moment that we can, I believe that we will be eternally happy.

Yes, life is worth living although sometimes we are really confronted with circumstances that push us to end it. Life is very meaningful.
That is if we believe in God and the Holy Bible as the Word of God which is the truth.
We should not just be overwhelmed by our success, wealth, and everything material. As for me now, I am a servant of God, I was given the gift of knowledge and understanding Bible Greek so I now translate the Word of God from Greek to English. But before this, I was not and I was just like any other individual who does not know God.
We should always cherish the life that God gives us. May God bless you. SEN

If God and the Bible make you feel more comfortable with your life, good for you. Those two never did much for me and I won't let a book rule my life, not even The Hichiker's Guide To The Galaxy (joke!).
I'm sure that you could write a few arguments I'd be delighted to counter in my rant called "Does God exist?". :)

I'm Christian so I know one reasons I'm living for. Outside of that what I've found is that life gives back what you put into it. If you put nothing into it it gives nothing back. What I feel is a meaningless life someone might see as a full life. So, to me, the only life I can measure up to my mine. I know that my life has had meaning because I've loved and been loved.

It's meaningful to me. But that, I think, is because I really live.
Most people do not.
Sure, they're alive physically speaking...but they don't LIVE, their life is made up of nothing but existing.
It's not a fun thing to be...but hey, that's my opinion. I know reality's subjective lol. But this is how I see reality, everyone else sees it differently...maybe those who agree with me only agree because I think they should and those who don't simply because I expect critics and disagreement.
*shrugs* Either way...living, by my definition. Is by filling EVERY moment with being original, with being yourself, by being aware...not only of yourself but things and people around you. By doing your best and conciously making decisions, weighing things to the best of your ability. Seeking out what you enjoy, trying to make a difference.
EVERYONE is forgotten eventually. Even if you're famous, or you're a hero. It doesn't mean those people were meaningless.
Everyone makes a difference. Cause and effect, right? Things are too complicated for us to see HOW everyone makes a difference...most people the best they can hope for is to make a difference for a moment. It might not be worldwide recognize, but it mattered to one person...or to nature somehow, or to your CAT for all you know.
And who says we have to be recognized to matter? Why the hell do things just so people're aware you exist? Hell. Everything gets recycled too. Your character as a person may pop up in the soup as someone in a book that someone wrote...you may become the melody of a song for all you know.
Call it the void if you want, but things never stop changing..and ideas never die. It's the only way we're truly immortal...our ideas. We ourselves and what we did can be forgotten...but our ideas get passed on.
It's how we're recycled lol.
*Shakes my head*
I simply cannot view everything as meaningless. Nothing really is meaningless. Not even Nothingness itself is meaningless...at least not completely. Maybe to us, but to someone else? To the recycling process?
Everyone has to find their own point though.
This is my point, this is what I've pondered over..this is how I see reality. But then as I said, it's possible there's not even a reality. That we all make up our own. That I'm not even really sitting here typing this.
It's wonderful in a fanciful, imaginary way.
I think things only seem so lonely and depressing...when we think we know what's real and what's not..
so what I mean is, no one can really know that-- what is real, for hundred percent certain. Nobody.
Oh, sure..plenty of people think they can, but that's how they see their reality.
And when it comes down to it...does it really matter if there's a universal point, several points, or none? It doesn't really affect our lives as individuals right? And if none of it's real...what can we do but keep assuming it is anyway and defining how we see things?
I don't really think it makes a difference if it matters, or what's real...we're all alive we think, but the sad part is...many people just exist, never really attempting to define their reality, to consider these deep questions, they just exist...going through the motions, boring...frightened to come out of their boringness and routine...few of us really live.
That's why when we come across someone we see is really living, we admire them. We love them, we idolize them....even if for really they don't really live, we still think they do. People really wish they could be that underneathe it all...a great many of the existers that is. But they fear it as much as they admire it, probably because they do admire it. Because living is such an extreme, wild, unpredictable thing.
Anyway...I've gone on about my madness long enough, lol.

But I know mylot would be sorely lacking without ye, dearie. I look and look for meaningful discussions, and I always did find them in your discussions. Few others seem to posess the will or the desire to post them anymore *sad*
And sorry to hear you've been havin' problems with trolls and fundies O_O I've had a hard time with 'em too on here, anyway, I know the feelin'. I hopes you can endure despite the occasional mad rant from a troll or fundie on here. Goodness knows it can be hard for the rest of us sensible people too.

Life would be worth living according on ur purpose in your life!
All i know is that, we are living in this world because we have something to share, something to understand, something to do, a purpose!
Life would be worth when you feel like you've been satisfied on what your doing and what you accomplished to make other people think how we should value every seconds of our life..
What i really dont understand is those people who's asking if life or their lives is really worth living, coz you'll never know till you've done your part in this world!

Hi Thomas
you should be thankful to god for this life of yours. whether you acheive anything in life or you get recognised is a different thing. sit aside for a while and think how is your life functioning. look the way god ve design you. you breathe, move, walk, hear, see etc without battery electricity or fuel. you just feed your stomach and everything is done on its own. just imafine the function of your kidney. we wont b able to afford even that for our entire life. so even if you dont do anything in life, you have acheived alot by meeting nice people like us, visiting good places, answering good topic etc...... :)

I think the challenge is very worth it! Not to leave an indelible mark for all to see, but rather to leave a mark that satisfies the marker. For instance, some wish only to have a happy family, raising children that they think will make an improvement in the world. They're not thinking in macroscopic terms, but more in terms of a little bit of good leaving several little marks on its journey through life. Kind of sweetening the pot, not making a main dish. Others are content with making their mark through their vocational and/or recreational skills and/or talents, leaving a benchmark of sorts for others to see or learn about in the future. I really don't think life is about the macroscopic goal(s) society tries to make more important than life itself. It's about satisfying the individual's need or goal of feeling that what they did with/in their life was worth it. And that it did some good for others too.

I at 36 years of age have already achieved so much. I have so many family and friends I have touched in someway, that I don't need any more than that. I reckon this question really depends on the person you are asking. Each person has to rate their own lives and their achievements, I think. Me I'm happy with what I have done so far. I don't have to validate my self worth or my life’s value on bringing change to the world. Just a few is good enough for me.

yep. we all have our roles in this life. as for me, as a daughter, a sibling, a girlfriend, a friend and so on. maybe the best thing to feel that life is worth living is to find satisfaction in a sense of being happy with the people we love most.

Because He lives,
I can face tomorrow!
Because He lives,
All fear is gone!
Because I know
He holds the future!
And life is worth the living just because Christ lives!
Amen! Yes life is worth living because Jesus Christ lives and He holds the future.

You should try Him sometime. Jesus just might put a wonderful, genuine smile on your face!

You are miserable, scared, lonely, sad, without peace...all because you want nothing to do with God Who loves you so very much. He has a wonderful plan for your life and you choose to throw it all away. You seem to be a very intellegent man who has a lot to offer. God has blessed you with so many things and you can make a positive difference in so many lives, but you choose to try and make people as miserable as you are. You are rebelling against God and maybe you just don't know any better. How sad and how tragic!
You can say all the ugly things you want. I love the Lord and I am so thankful for all that He has done in my life. I have joy unspeakable and my life IS worth living because I have the love of God! YOUR life is worth living as well!
God bless you, Thomas.

Yes it is! God sent his son to die so that we could live! That is worth!
I guess if you think all there is to life is to breathe, move, feed, and mate then you would not see how worthy our life is.
I have not contibuted to sciences, art, or literature in ways some would see but I have in my children and friends and they will to others and so on and so on.
Once I learned what our purpose here is evrything changed!
Our purpose is to enjoy letting God enjoy us. Once I saw that and trusted him I saw how worthy every life is!
