There are more than two parties, but the Democrats and republicans have such a strangle hold on power and the political special interests and corporate donations essential for running for national office that its easy to think of the others as fringe or vanity parties. The Libertarian party is gaining more momentum every year. And Ross Perot showed people that a third party candidate could be someone other than Ralph Nader or Pat Paulsen.
