Look for some genuine sites like getafreelancer, getacoder. Try and bid for the projects in your field of expertise. You have to be very patient.

I have never done freelance across the internet, how often would I expect to get jobs? I have only been working locally desiging intranet applications which were deployed on Linux servers.
