Trailer full of broccoli disappears...is broccoli that expensive???

Per Yahoo News - "VILLA PARK, Ill. - Someone got way more than the recommended daily serving of vegetables when a refrigerated trailer loaded with $50,000 worth of broccoli was stolen."
Now why would someone want to steal a truckload of broccoli? Are they that low in iron? Maybe an alien that suvives on only broccoli? Or maybe it is a new fuel for someone and they were desperate. Why do you think someone would steal a huge truck of broccoli?

It could have been my three year old daughter, I will have to check under her bed! We recently went to a Perkins resturant and when she ordered off the kids meal the waitress asked what she wanted as a side. She decided on broccoli! The waitress looked at me to make sure that she knew what she was ordering and even offered her french fries instead (which upset me a little), but my 3 year old went ahead with the broccoli. The only thing she likes better is corn!

You have a very wise daughter, and a healthy one at that. Shame on the waitress for trying to convince her to order french fries. What is that woman thinking? It is so much better to have vegetables than french fries.

Hmmm.. Maybe they really really like it. They will probably sell it to a vendor at a flea market for next to nothing. They just want some cash. They also might have thought it was a load of something else.

I agree with Smithfamily. Not only does not everyone always search but I can tell you, my search doesn't always work either. So it deters one from searching every time. And I can say that I did NOT copy you. To copy would mean that I copied and pasted. Just so happens that we both posted about the like story. I am sorry it offended you but I can tell you I have NEVER purposely copied anyone's discussion!!!
And again, if the search would always work...then maybe more people would rely on it.
BTW...how many repeated discussions have we all seen on this site?
Thanks Smithfamily, for sticking up for me.

It sounds like the thief was looking to steal the truck more than the broccoli or may have thought there was more valuable things in there than food. The article didn't say anything if the truck was labeled or not so maybe the thief though something else was in there. It is funny though because who would need that much broccoli? :-) I wonder how the thief feels now after finding out he has broccoli.

Now, wouldn't it be even more hilarious if they find the truck but no broccoli? LOL

They probably saw the trailer sitting and just decided to take it not even knowing what was inside. Some people do make money by selling items to small grocery stores, maybe they figured they could sell it for profit.

That was my reaction too. LOL Thus, me thinking there must be another reason...I like my theroy of it being used for aliens. LOL Maybe that is all an alien can eat. Or maybe they use it as fuel...a environmental alien. LOL

Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was an independent trucker. For awhile I was a produce hauler. Yep, I have no trouble believing a truck load of broccoli was stolen. I'd believe it even if it was just lettuce or carrots. All of this stuff sometimes gets stolen. Why?
Every major city in the USA has produce markets where truckers bring their loads to the produce wholesalers. Sometimes, due to weather, traffic conditions, trouble getting crop workers, or whatever, certain items become temporarily scarce. Whatever that item is becomes likely to be stolen as it can be quickly sold at a premium. Even if it is broccoli.

broccoli can be expensive, depends where you dine.
My wife, daughter and I were at Applebee's once and my daughter ordered a side of broccoli with her mac and cheese. I ended up giving her my broccoli that came with my meal so she hardly finished her broccoli.
When I got the check her broccoli, (a small plate of about 5 pieces) was like $2.49. I was pissed. Those 5 pieces cost Applebees about 25 cents.

If I were them I would take that broccoli and find the nearest river and dump it all in there. No way anyone needs that much broccoli let alone any broccoli. Or...
Perhaps they can take the truck out of state and sell broccoli on the black market. I hear that broccoli goes for a pretty penny in the underground.

50 grand worth of broccoli? That sounds lie a heck of a lot of broccoli! I've heard of truck loads of lobsters being hijacked, but never broccoli.
Hey, maybe someone grabbed a truckload of lobsters and they needed a side dish. Now they need to steal a truck load of rice.

That is just totally demented. I like broccoli and so do my kids but not that much. I bet they did it just to see if they could, or it was practice for a bigger better truck. Who knows but it still demented.

I could hardly believe but perhaps they need that for the season. It's going to be new year and broccoli is needed in the preparation. They might supply that to a market which in turn sell them. Perhaps there's a low supply of broccoli there.
In the Philippines, we have quite an abundant supply from Baguio City and many Filipinos have not learned using it yet besides the fact that it's expensive and only the rich could afford to buy.
A dollar here now is equivalent to Php49 and so $50,000 is equivalent to about Php250,000 or 2.5 million? I'm poor in computation but that's really a big amount of money here.

hahaha! this is damn funny! are they sure the trailer was stolen? maybe it just got lost along the backroads, lol! or maybe the driver thought it would make a nice christmas gift to people starving along illinois. or maybe he will steal the truck and fuel, and restart a new business using it. damn crazy!
