I use quite a few and here they are. Feel free to post the ones you use frequently. Hoping that this will help each of us with our research. Maybe we'll find something we didn't know about! 1. http://www.usgenweb.org - This is the main portal for rootsweb and their US sites. From here you can go directly to the state sites (and then the county sites) or you can do a search right in the archives. That is handy sometimes if you are in a rush and have a unique surname that could be in several different locations. 2. http://www.familysearch.org - This site has a ton of information and online databases. From here you can search the IGI, several census databases, the Ancestral File, SSDI, Pedigree Resource File, a collection of helpful websites and the library catalog. Also they have a great collection of printable forms, research guides and language helps. Also should mention they have a step-by-step online class for starting research. 3. http://www.raogk.org - This is where I go for lookup help when I can't find lookup help on a county, state or country page. 4. http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/ - Books We Own. Another place for lookup help. 5. http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/deathrecords.html - Excellent online list of paid and free death record databases. 6. http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/vitalrecords.html - Excellent online list of paid and free birth and marriage databases. I should mention also that this site has alot of other resources like immigration and naturalization resources, census links and german genealogy. 7. http://www.worldgenweb.org - The rootsweb portal for world genealogy. Breaks it down by country and then by province. Great place to get started when doing international research. 8. http://maxpages.com/ourlostfamily/Ships - Online Listing of links to Ships and Immigration Centers. I've found things here I haven't found any where else. 9. http://www.censuslink.com - A superb collection of links for free online census records. 10. http://www.cyndislist.com - Can't forget this one. The online directory for everything and anything genealogy! I also have a bunch of links that I use for specific area research, like for specific states. I might have something you are looking for. Just drop me a line and I'll check. What "free" genealogy sites do you use?

Thank you for the links. I use some of them, but did not know about a couple of the sites or had forgot about them. I also use the message boards on genealogy.com to search for people and connections. I have received some very helpful tips through the message board on genealogy.com.

The message boards can be really helpful. The ones at rootsweb.com/ancestry.com are pretty helpful as well. Not only are they great for tips and connecting with kin but I've found alot of data on there that people just post; everything from cemetery records to obituaries. And it's also a last ditch place to try for lookups if you can't get them any where else. Thanks for the reminder!

This is great! I didn't know any of these free sites, and I can't pay for them! I'll check these out...I was doing a lot of research on our family before I moved out here. Back home I had an archives building in town, so I could do lots of research. There's nothing I can go to where I live now. Thank you for posting these, I will use them and I'll let you know about the specific states when I get into it. Thank you for this posting!

I don't have any free sites to offer other than the one's you've already listed. Just like the others who have commented, some I've used, but many I was not aware of. Thanks for listing these and helping out your fellow geneologists.
