Should we be looking for new planets to inhabit?

The human race seems to have given up all efforts to save our planet, and instead all the money seems to be going into space exploration and finding a new planet to colonise, once we've completely trashed this one. Shouldn't we be trying to repair the damage we've done and keep this planet habitable? And if the scientists should find a new habitable planet, will all the rich folks blast off to live there, leaving the rest of us to the waste we've made of this planet? Will the Earth be even more of a dumping ground for them, with a kind of "Metropolis"-esque thing going on, all the workers living in squalor, working our butts off for the "master-race" of rich people who own the factories and companies living on planet Zog, where they don't have to see the effects of their actions? What do you all think? I personally find it a pretty terrible thought, but knowing humankind, that's probably the way it will go!

Well, I'm sure the attitude there will be by most higher ups concerning this (if it isn't already) is, whoops, we messed up this planet, let's find the next one! A lot of people are in denial about just how much damage Earth has suffered, but I think part of it is natural too. We should be prepared for the fact that, in some distant place in the future, the earth is going to go through it's next stage which will make it pretty much an entire ocean with no land. We're not helping with all our gas-powered cars and waste and such, but in the end, it's going to happen. Just like the ice age. The Earth goes into different ages. If we truly want to survive as a race, humans do need to eventually look for new planets to live on. Earth's not going to be livable forever.
As for 'Metropolis', I'm not sure about that. Knowing how stubborn the human race is, I'm sure we won't leave until we absolutely HAVE to. Hey. It'd make for a good movie!

we have made such a mess of this planet i dont know why we should destroy other planets
all the money being spent on wars, outerspace exploration and all the other usless things could make this planet a better place to live withing 6 months for everyone
how much does every goevernment spend on war/army every week it would have to be a total of a few billion dollars, now a few billion dollars spend on education the poor, renewable energy, etc each week we all could be in luxury within the next two years

Yes we should be looking, as this planet is on it's way out, because I feel that earth is getting nearer and nearer to the sun and we will not be able to stand the heat in the not to distant future.

no neither of those are true, but the sun is slowly expanding and will eventually "swallow up" the earth but that will be in a couple billion years so i think we are ok for now.

we better start looking atleast i would preffer so cause after a little amount of just about 50 yrs it would be amore of a chllenge to live or survive on earth then to live a life of luxuries and accomodtion HUMan race too would come to an EXTINCTION and perhaps due to LACKCITY or scarcity of food at a certain period people will become cannibles and eat each other!!!!!!!! it would be horrible finishing almost half of the race in this way and the rest in one way or another,my be only some would survive who would carry on the raceand live on other plnets with perhaps some other weird creatures and the world would be just like a beautiful, fairy land which is no more then a legend!!!!!

We still have room on this planet. Man has made such a mess of it though. If they move on, they will make a mess of that too over time. But, it will happen for sure.

GREAT POST! I as well can see this happening. It amazes me how truly uncaring people of this world really are. We throw our garbage on the streets,we pollute the waters we are suppose to drink from, we spill chemicals in that same water as well as the grounds we use to plant our crops to get food to eat. "Man" has ruined everything "we" have touched. If it can make that almighty dollar we build it,destroy everything around it and count the dollars we made. People don't seem to understand what is happening, but here ya go...I live in the northeast of the U.S. it is suppose to be freezing COLD here right now yet it is warm. Places are getting hit with severe storms they shouldn't be having. Well, I guess there is only one thing to do...get your gas masks and spacesuits ready if you are not rich, cause we are going to be living in the biggest dumpyard ever.

i sure hope that they are thinking of inhabiting new planets because i really want to live on another planet. and about "Shouldn't we be trying to repair the damage we've done and keep this planet habitable?" i believe that this planet will always being habitable, at least in our life time, because there is not, and will not be, enough damage to this planet in the near future to make it inhabital. also if we do finally decide to inhabit say mars i do not believe there will be many people going there. not many people have the belief that an outside planet is as safe to live on as earth.

We should concentrate on saving the planet we have right now. Despite all the technological advances I would say we are a long way off from colonising another planet even if we do find one that's habitable. We would be better investing our time and energy into finding ways of undoing the damage we have already done to the Earth and ensuring we don't damage it any further.

Oh yeah, let's leave our waste behind and go pollute and kill another planet!
Human beings have been nothing but a parasite to this poor planet. Just like a flea infested dog being sucked dry and left to die in flea doo doo.
I think we need to stay here and leave other planets alone.
You're right about the fact that it would be the rich that would go to that new planet, too.
I can definitely see them sending all their garbage back here, too.
Earth will just be a giant dump.

Yes what u said is correct. We ae spoiling our planet ourselves. And we are now trying to go into space to inhabit. But in future definitely there will be colonies in the moon where people will start living and there wqill be frequent travelling from earth to moon.

I'm not sure where you heard that
1-Our planet is dying
2-No one is trying to stop environmental decay
or 3-More money is invested in space exploration than environmental research
because I'm not sure any of those are true. I don't think there is any real chance that humans will live on any planet other than Earth, at least not for a very very very long time. Its just way way off in technology to be feasible.

Have to say I agree with your comments. There are many people out there still trying to save this planet. I think you will see attitudes change dramatically towards the environment over the next ten years.

I have to agree with your comments. There are still plenty of people trying to save this planet. I think you will see attitudes change dramatically towards environmental issues in the next ten years. Its happening already.

No. Earth should be saved by us. People should try to contribute to save the Earth and the environment where we live. Put trash on their proper place don't throw it anywhere. Keep the air clean don't be a source of extra air pollution. This is where we live and like our homes we must keep it clean and do our best to make it a nice place to live in.

Inhabit other planets? No! We have screwed up this one so bad that we don't deserve another one. Fix this one first. We are in this pickle because people are just too lazy to do the right thing. Put our planet first for once, heal our Mother Earth, we owe it to her. We still have time, but time is running out fast.

Geez...I don't want to think about that...I think that we should be saving this planet. I personally would not want to be living on another planet somewhere in space. I like this planet just fine..however we all need to wake-up and realize what is going on and take the necessary steps to save it. What about our kids and future generations...I don't think everyone is getting the full picture and the destruction that is already taken place..with global warming and the environment....

Humans are capable of learning from their past mistakes. I doubt they were destroy the next planet that is capable of inhabiting. We found out our mistakes on Earth a little too late. We're trying to fix this but it requires everyone to contribute, which is almost impossible. The best way would be to start over in a new planet similar to earth.

People will just take their bad habits with them to whatever planet they try to colonize! It's not too late for the earth, if humans wanted to they could start right now to reverse the effect of the damage we've done and are doing every day. People don't want to give up certain conveniences, and it's compounded by the rich keep certain technologies in prominence because it makes the most dollars for investment compared to more environmentally friendly means.
If people can't change her and now in the face of the disaster we are creating for ouselves, moving to a new planet isn't going to suddenly make them change, it just gives them new ground to exploit.

ive heard that some people have already booked some land on the moon! it is possible, what you say. though the prospect is interesting, it will not be time when they trash the other place too. we never learn from our mistakes do we? even though people are aware of our environmental situations, are we taking enough steps to mitigate the problems, i think not.

instead of looking for options,we should strive to make earth a better place.one person cant change the world but we must keep working for it, irrespective of what others are doing.

I agree with you.
The way mankind thinks and their attitude towards nature, environment is shocking and terrible.
Earth as such has been so much polluted and degraded, no doubt about this being repeated in other planets if we colonise it.
Its a sad thing that not many people care about Earth and think about future like we do.
Lets spread awareness and try to repair the damage already done to earth.

I agree. Finding another planet won't do anything towards mending our ways - in fact it'll just be a shameful act of evading our responsibilities, and once we've done that, we'll become the parasites of the universe, instead of just the parasites of earth.

Why, so we can wreck more planets in the solar system? We've done such a good job keeping this one safe and sound. We can't just keep hopping from one planet to the next. Or thinking about planet hopping. Perhaps we should try to fix this one!
