What settings do you use when you're playing DDR?

I just got into DDR and bought it a few weeks ago. (I know, I'm years late on the craze) Right now the setting I use is Light...I haven't even gotten through all the songs yet. How long did it take you to master it where you felt comfortable enough to bump it up a notch? Also, are there are tricks I should know to unlock more songs? I'm doing well so far but I'm excited to see and hear more.

I play on Standard and Heavy. I use DDR2 though, so it the songs are different. There are 3 songs I can't beat on Standard, so I wouldn't say I've mastered it, but I can play it pretty well. On Heavy I can do several songs well, but its still iffy. I've probably completed succesfully about half the songs on Heavy.
I haven't been able to get a AAA yet, but I can do AA easily on Light, and fairly easily for some songs on Standard. I think if I went back and played Light more I could do it, but the songs seem too easy once you get used to the harder stuff.

I play light and standard. I decided to bump it a little since my oldest daughter and I are in competition when we play. She also plays on standard. Right now since we live in an upstairs apartment we mostly play on the controllers and I ususally do standard or expert. This has actually helped me learn to play standard a little better.

I played it by feel and bumped it up as I went. I also didn't go by light or medium or heavy - I went by the foot rating (1-10). I couldn't beat a 4-footer when I first started, and now I can beat most of the 10-footers. It just takes continuous practice.
