At age 28 my friend suddenly says she has aspergers syndrome. I'm not sure that she does, she has some symptoms, but then, so do a lot of people. I reckon she's buying into the fact that it's a commonly banded about disease/ syndrome now and she feels she can use it as an excuse for things in her life and also to not work, as she's never really worked or shown much inclination to work. She is an intelligent woman, I really feel she's selling herself short by labelling in this way. She hasn't been to a doctor or psychologist or anything, it just seems to be a self diagnosis. What does everyone out there think about this?

Well it is possible that she has it. Asperger's is the type of thing that commonly goes misdiagnosed... I wouldn't totally write her off because she could be telling you the truth. On the other hand, she really should have someone (doctor, psych) make the diagnosis. It's ashame to think that someone would make up such a thing just to make excuses for themselves. True cases of these illnesses are sad, and shouldn't be joked about.
