How do you discipline your children?

When I was a child I was disciplined by spankings. I said that I would never use that form of discipline with my child. Now that I have a son I rarely spank him (only if really needed) but I take away the things that he likes to do instead. How do you guys discipline your children? What do you think the most effective form of discipline is?
