I leave mine on when I go to bed, and signed in, because if I don't, when I turn it on again, my security scanner restarts and slows everything down. I just switch off the screen, which saves electricity and I'm sure if the pc is inactive, you don't use much electricity anyway. The same, when I go out for a couple of hours. I leave it on, but go invis on IMs. That way, if peeps want to send me IMs, I get them when I come back, and I can resume what I was doing on the computer on my return, without having to sign in.

My AVG is set to automatically update and scan every morning at 8 a.m. and the Mail Scanner is on permanently. I also have a scanner set for a quick scan every time I open a programme, scanning for pop-ups etc., set for 3 a.m. So, I think I'm pretty well-covered. Windows also updates regularly. The problem is, if at these times my comp is turned off, it picks up the scan again when I log on, and that goes on for over an hour with the computer working at a very slow pace.

Maybe you might not have enough random access memmory and it is using your hard drive as memory (just a thought). My AVG is free but it looks like the 15th January is not going to be free anymore!

I presume that you update your virus scanner and scan often.

I only do this when I'm downloading large files. It is better to do this at night because the climate is cooler and overheating will not be an issue. I only leave the CPU turned on. I switch off the monitor and te speakers so that I can still save electricity.

Downloading large files does take a lot of time so it is best left on. But doing what you do by turning of the monitor and speakers will save in the long term.

My computer is on almost all day but i make sure that i switch them off during the night cos it gets very hot sometimes. Its better turning them off cos it doesnt hang up when i use it the next day. I've my automatic updates set during the night before i turn it off.

I do that too because it does not take too long for the computer to boot up and be ready for another gruelling day. Doing the updates manually gives peace of mind knowing that protection is updated.

Obviously being in an office has more security aspects to it being left on.

Our computer stays on when we get up till the time we either leave the house or till we go to bed. It seems if we leave the computer up all the time it starts slowing down and acting crazy. So we shut it off to give it a cool down period. We've also had computers blow up the few times we did leve them on all night. We'd hear a loud pop in the middle of the night and then the next day the computer wouldn't come on. So we're kind leery of leaving it on when we're not close to it now. We had lightening strike a computer once too.

Wow waking up to a computer blowout is frightening. Sounds like you may be getting surges through the electricity supply and in need of a surge protector.

I leave the electricity on, but have the computer shut down into standby. My updates are set for daytime when I'm watching TV - lol.

Being on standby should save some electricity.

I always turn my computer off at night to save on electricity and also due to safety reasons, the automatic updates are done for me whether I am on or off my computer so I do not have to worry about that and they are done at night.

At the office, my computer stays on for almost 10hrs to monitor all local communications at the plant...at home, definitely no....with the rising cost of power, it will only drains you up of your savings though your using a low consumption (40watts) LCD monitor....worst if your using a high consumption CRT monitor which consumes as much as 250watts and above of power.

I personally do not leave my computer on all of the time. I only leave it on when I intend to use it. When I am not using it I definitely do turn it off. As I've heard that keeping one's computer on for a long period of time that.. It will help to lessen the life of your computer/PC. But I've also heard that if one restarts there computer once in a while that it clears memory. In general I dislike leaving my computer on as the power bill would not be fun to pay once I get it.. I try to save on as much power as I can & I know the computer drains a lot of power.. I find by leaving one's computer on that all it does is run the power bill up! I also had my friend once leave there computer on all the time.. And they supposedly didn't have a great cooling system.. And what ended up happening was they had to replace some of there parts to there computer because.. They ended up melting due to the extreme heat.. So that could be another reason why I don't leave it on for hrs. upon hrs.. So that is my personal preference.. To turn it off when I am not using it.
