My New Year's Resolution is to lose a good amount of weight. I've tried over and over again but now I fear thta if I don't really lose some weight it is going to cause some real serious health issues.
I plan to exercise. I have a stationary bike and a treadmill that I have to get working. I may try to walk around the neighborhood on nice days. I will drink lots of water and lower my caloric intake.
Any other good suggestions? Any diets out there that really work? ANyone taking any supplements that really work? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

There are 2 books by Jordan Rubin called 'The Maker's Diet' and 'The Great Physicians Prescription for Health and Wellness'. Both books are wonderful. The second book is basically the same as the first, but both have great information. My husband and I aren't overweight, but we were both dealing with physical issues (i.e. IBS, constant headaches, heartburn, etc.) and following this diet actually diminished or completely removed these symptoms. This diet also helps with weight loss, so it's worth a shot. If you would like more info, go to these websites: www.makersdiet.com and www.gprxnow.com. Hope you find what you're looking for! :)

Good luck to you. I started my new diet (i'm doing it on my own) on January 2. After one week, I had lost 4 pounds and I will weigh in again on Monday and see how I'm doing. I don't expect to lose another 4 pounds but any loss would be great! Good luck!

Not only will you slow your metabolism down, you send signals to your brain saying something like "I didn't eat breakfast....that means I can eat a little bit more for lunch (or dinner)" The overall effect would be to binge on the next meal or two, which defeats the purpose of trying to lose weight.

This has been one of my resolutions for a few years now... :) But this year I hope to get seriously started because my Mom needs to loose weight as well and I'm hoping we can motivate each other, although because of her health issues, she has to start out slow. Anyway, tonight I read at AOL that to help kill cravings, you can get pine nuts, almonds or apples but I haven't tried this personally. I like talking walks but also turning on my music in my own home and dancing to it.

For me the best way to lose weight is walking. I'm fighting with my winter fat, I discover every spring my skirts are too small for me. Perhaps they are shrinking in the winter? Anyway, every spring when the snow is gone, I'm starting to walk again, every tay to work and back home, it makes about 6 km every day. It works. Now I have done it for couple of weeks, and my skirts are fitting me better already. so it seems to me, your idea about walking is a good idea.
The other thing: I promised myself, I do not buy chocolate anymore! If somebody gives it me, of course I'm enjoying it (I'm not a heroine enough to say: "Thanks but no, thanks"!) but I don't buy it myself.

Oops, now I saw I have suggested it walking before, as a comment, and I saw your answer also. My BF has a stepper, and it works for him also. He lost 3kg and is very proud (too proud, actually. He should lose 10 kg more, then there were a reason to be proud!)

I am trying to lose 50 pounds as well. I lost two and a half last week. I refuse to diet though. Instead, I am changing eating habits. I am only changing habits that I know I can keep up with for the rest of my life and it wont' just be a fad I go through. The first step I took was to start eating breakfast every morning. This helps with metabolism. The next thing was to slowly increase my water intake until I was up to 64 ounces per day. By doing this you will also lose water weight, your body will feel better as well. Then I decided my goal was to get 5 fruits and/or vegetables every day. I have stopped buying junk food, but if I want a treat now and then I allow it. I have been trying to pay close attention to portions and make sure that I am not over eating. I get plenty of food, I don't feel hungry, but I don't let myself eat until I feel extremely full. If I didn't get enough to eat I snack on fruit in between meals.

I have lost about 35-40 pounds so far. What worked for me was working out to walk away the pounds. Also drinking a whole lot of water. Oh also alot of weight gain comes from sugar! Well for me anyway, so I cut the sugary drinks like soda, juice, etc. I still treat myself though. OH and cut the junk food. Try to eat more fruits and veggies. You can get full off of fruits and veggies and they have less calories. Try to eat three meals and two snacks so you dont get like too hungry then you binge. Just my two cents, hope this helps.

One thing I forgot to mention earlier is to make sure never to deprive yourself of anything, no matter how fattening. If you really are craving it, you might be better off to allow yourself to have a small portion of your favorite junk food once in a while tnan to end up being so hungry for it later that you eat a large portion.
Just remember that if you eat the extra calories, you should compensate by trying to increase the calories you burn. An extra snack might equal a few extra situps or a little extra walking etc.
If you backslide a little one day, don't be too hard on yourself, instead make up for it the next day. I lost 35 pounds this way last year.

1. Drink water
Water is quite possibly the single most important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off longer term.
Water acts as an appetite suppressant by keeping your stomach full and fending off dehydration which can lead to false cravings/hunger.
Water also helps your body metabolize stored fat by helping the kidneys flush out waste. When you don't drink enough water the liver which works to provide stored fat for energy helps the kidneys eliminate waste and becomes less effective at metabolizing fat.
Drinking water ice cold burns about 62 calories a day. Your body has to work to raise that waters temperature to your body's temperature. This equals around 430 calories per week.
2. Eat regularly
This means eating 5 times a day and the most important meal is breakfast.
Make sure you fuel your body first thing in the morning to avoid hunger pangs later in the day.
When you eat 5 times a day you will never feel hungry, make sure the total calories consumed are sensible and don't over eat in any of the meals learn portion size control!
3. Eat lots of fibre
Eating adequate fiber foods to help keep things moving through your bowel. And like water, fiber rich foods bulk you up and make you feel fuller for longer.
Fibre is found only in plant foods our bodies cant digest it to so it simply goes through the body. During the elimination process it cuts calories consumed by attaching to protein and fat that you eat along with it removes that as well
In addition, high fiber foods are typically low in calories and filling, so you are reducing your calorie intake overall.
Good fibre foods include: strawberries, apples, figs, chickpeas, potatoes, (with skins) broccoli, brown rice, beans, bran and nuts.
4. Consume more good fats
There are good fats and bad fats
Good fats provide you with essential fatty acids (linoleic and linolenic acids) needed for normal reproduction and growth, as well as for production of prostoglandin, a hormone like compound that regulates blood pressure, prevents blood clotting and lowers the risk of heart disease.
For example, the reason oily fish is a great food stems from the fact that the essential fatty acids which it contains can actually help your body burn fat more efficiently and protect against disease. Get at least three portions of oily fish a week with Salmon, mackerel, herrings and sardines being good choices. 5. Get plenty of quality protein
Quality protein is an effective weight control tool because of the satiety factor and its ability to keep you full for longer periods. It also balances out carbohydrates by preventing insulin spikes that cause energy loss and sugar cravings
Protein helps to maintain muscle mass which is important in the fat burning process.
Good choices include:
Fish, shrimps, Low fat cottage cheese, low fat yogurt, skimmed milk, egg whites, s Weight gain is caused by consuming too many calories, whether they are from carbohydrate, protein or fat.
6. Carbohydrates can help you lose weight
Don't believe what you read about carbohydrates being bad for you, they can actually help you lose weight!
A diet containing good carbohydrates such fruits and vegetables, wholegrains and moderate in fat and calories, will result in weight loss
Good carbohydrates will also help you combat hunger pangs as they are slowly realized into the body.
When eating carbohydrates eat them "from the earth" with no refining or processing.
These include whole grains, vegetables; fruits and beans.
Sensible weight loss
If you have read the above you will see that it is not the food group, but the quality of the food in it that's important for fast weight loss.

I did the curves diet and if you really want to loose weight and put your mind to it it works. I also belong to curves and love it. It really builds your body up and you meet a lot of great new friends. I lost 20 pounds when I did there diet. It is hard to stick to any diet but if you want it you will eventually do it. I just stopped eating white anything and bought no fat products, no sugar ones and so forth. I take vitamins too, you got to.

losing weight is really a tough work. it really needs a lot of sacrifice, hard work and discipline.
since the day i was born, i was overweight. people called me "BABOY" (PIg) because of my body figure.,
but now, i lose weight without even noticing it. and i have figure it out that the day since my body slim down is when i took my Swimming Class, which is part of our school curriculum.
and based on my research, swimming burns a lot of fat without me noticing it. i just thought it as a sports and at the same time as a game., and now! thanks to swimming 'cause i lose weight. i became body concious, i continously discipline myself, i had a hard time walking and running to maintain the shape of my body.
and it does not only improve ur body, it also improve your self-esteem, just like mine!
hope i'd helped u in a little way!
ciao!
