Attention everyone who grew up in the 1980's

I am 37 years old. In 1985, I was 16. I am convinced that the 1980's were the greatest decade in which to have grown up. We had fun. We had no fear. The music was wonderful, the clothes were fun, and the movies were phenominal. I was watching "Sixteen Candles" the other day on TBS and it occurred to me that my kids, aged 4 and 8, will never see movie making of this caliber. John Hughes was a genius. And the "brat pack" was excellent.
I have to admit to being a mall rat in my teens. I wore leg warmers with my Jordache jeans and I had big hair. The bigger the better. There was a whole in the ozone right above my bathroom. I wore bangles on my wrists, huge hoop earrings. I had suede boots. I had big belts. All of this I got from my many trips to the mall. Although most from my generation have quit smoking now, I fondly remember sitting in the food court with a slice of pizza, a diet coke, and a cigarette burning in the ashtray talking about boys and what store we were going to next. Does anyone remember a time when kids weren't taking guns to school and killing each other. In my day, a fight was a fight and if you brandished a weapon, it was considered a wussy thing to do.
As for the music, say what you want about the "hair bands" but those guys could sing. Most of the musicians of today, although very good songwriters, have little vocal talent. The songs are lacking in drama, and the females especially, have a very lackluster vocal quality. What ever happened to Heart, Pat Benatar, etc. Where is the ability to belt out a song. Though groups, such as the Killers, are starting to bring back the "New Wave" sound, today's music for the most part just doesn't have the ability to make me feel good. Not like the 80's.
So tell me, my fellow 80's children, where has John Hughes gone? Say it with me, "80's RULE!!"

here, here! :)
i'm 34, and was into both the new wavey stuff and the heavier stuff.
though you seem to have been more over the top in your 80's fashion, i admit to having worn fluorescent colors, mismatched socks, big earrings and belts. and i had GUYS envying my teased hair ;) (hung out with a lot of long-haired guys....)
i still love 80's music, no matter what anyone says! there is a coffee house/bistro i like to eat dinner at because 8 out of 10 chances are in favor of hearing 80's music as a backdrop ;) more times than not, this usually becomes the forefront of the dinner, and not just background music. some of the stuff they play is a bit more obscure, some one-hit-wonders, etc, so i spend most of dinner, sitting there with my dinner-partner playing name-that-song ;)
or telling little anecdotes about what we may have been doing when the song was released....or just exclaiming 'omg! this SONG!' because we had forgotten about it until now.
on a sidenote...i initially thought the killers were so cool coz their first single had that keyboardy sound to it that reminded me of the 80s...but i soon lost interest, as the rest of their music is a bit too generic for my taste.

if you`re interested, take a listen to the band called `mobile`....their well-known song is called `montreal calling` (yup they are from my hometown of montreal). i think they have that same 80s feel that the killers had on their first album.

Oh I couldn't agree more. I'm 38 and my teen years were all in the 80's. It was a fantastic time with some great movies, music and television. Some of my favorites to watch and listen to still today. So much happened during that ten years. The berlin wall coming down, the soviet union and communism ending, the Challenger explosion, the beginning of computers...it was a time of so much change and impacting news. The 90's had nothing on it. The 80's were a very special time and for those of us who grew up in it I think we are very lucky.

Oh yeah. What have the 90's and the new millineum got to show? Iraq? The 80's were a wonderful time and we were politcally aware. We also had a lot of fun. I think 80's teens are the ones who are going to live the longest since we began our climb to adulthood with the least stress. LOL. OK, just a theory.

Hi. My name is Cougar, and I'm an 80's junkie. (All respond: "Hello, Cougar!") LOL! I'm excited to see the skinny jeans come back! Remember the ones you could barely fit your ankles through at the bottom? Not that I could get away with wearing them today!
School dances every Friday night to those GREAT songs! I was lead singer in a rock band in high school. Tell me THOSE aren't great memories! Bon Jovi is still hot, too!
Leg warmers, ah yes! And bandanas tied around your leg. Wide belts, big hair, bigger earrings, bangles, The Bangles, Van Halen when they were good, and "Ferris Beuler's Day Off." I'm raising my kid right. She likes AC/DC, Bob Segar, Blue Oyster Cult, Van Halen, and the heavy metal of the hair bands. Thank God! I don't think I could stand it if I had to listen to rap all day! LOL!
