I think it would be best to take away the distractions like tv and computer games, which is a lot like keeping them from candies and junk food. Even if they abandon reading after discovering the joys of PlayStation, it won't be hard for them to read a book when they grow older. Of course, it would be best if they don't stop reading!

Good advice from all the posters above! It's important, yet sometimes hard, to instill good reading habits into little children. My nephew also had the same problem, and just wasn't interested. So for Christmas that year I bought him books about the subjects he was interested in. I got him a book about pond life (because he was always poking around in the pond looking at the bugs, frogs and everything) and other age appropriate books that peaked his interest in the things he liked. I told him we could take the pond book with us when we went back there and look for some of the things we saw in the pictures, even if we got the pages a little muddy. Then after a while, he decided he wanted to read about 'what frogs eat' and all kinds of things. Worked pretty well, but it had to be a book on a subject that he was really interested in...even if WE weren't. He won't be hyper and disinterested forever, it's probably just a stage he's going through right now. Good luck!

Besides the above, make sure you read ot your kids every night - or have the read to you - and make sure you read in front of them - books, magazines or newspapers - to show them that you read as well.

I read to my children when they were to young to read, I read all the time so they saw that habit, they would get a book and come sit with me when they were little..I would always allow them to get a book when we would go out shopping...still do. now I have them read a half an hour before bedtime...but they read for pleasure on their own.

By not forcing them to read first and foremost! Although set a time that at the end of the day you can sit down and read out aloud to them even if it's bed time! Have them help if they can. If they're not interested I'd say don't stop, continueing reading, and continue with the regular time, hopefully eventually they'll be comming to you.
