How harmful are radioactive substances?

In Chemistry,radon is said to be the heaviest radioactive gas by-product of uranium;a strong radioactive metal.But i steal dont understand why these radioactive subtances are still applied into medical diagnosis such as X-rays,still people say the are harmful to the body
