You may think from the tiltle of the discussion that you're gonna find somekind of an actually ignorant narrow-minded pathetic racist's comments. Therefore I did it on purpose to draw some attetion to an issue that have long affected many individuals.
It's actually the "Clichets" or prejudice, those social "viruses" that threaten human relationships and create boundaries between people .
They make people predict your acts and thoughts, and judge you based on your religion, appearance, cultural differences..
Do you think that people are now more aware of this danger? And if you had similar experience, you could share it with us?

Well we still live in a society of institutional "isms": racism, classism, sexism, and now more likely homophobia. People are very comfortable with their hate. Look at television at the shows like "Ugly Betty", "Earl", and others that feed the sterotypes. And Americans are continually laughing. I have been judged of those standards and it has been most hurtful. Even being a Christian invites antagonism in a country for which it was founded.
The problem is we misunderstand one thing: History does not repeat itself; people repeat history.

I myself went several times through this experience just because of my religion.
And you're right TV shows similar to those you cited are aggravating the problem.

You are so true, people do repeat history, and it's sad that in this time, we can not be more tolerant towards others. I would for once like when someone askes me where my family is from originaly, would understand Algeria, not not view me as a terrorist, but as an educated American.

We were born in a world divided by several walls that separates us from each other, religion, culture, race etc etc. It has been like this since time immemorial. War bet tribes and races. Discrimination bet the poor and rich among others. I don't think we can eliminate this problem in our lifetime, but as you said, awareness of its existence and danger is a good starting point. Perhaps in our own small personal world, we can do what is right and hoping it will influence others then eventually the world. That's a hope against hope.

Well done - I completely agree with your point of view. If we each do our bit and teach our children to do the same, maybe all the isms in the world can be reduced. All little bit of each to his own goes a long way.

Not all Americans are ignorant, as I know many Americans. Not all Arabs are terrorists, there are terrorists of different races. Not all blondes are stupid, as I know a few of them who are quite smart. I know one in fact, who is travelling to Poland to teach. She has been all over the world and is extremely smart.
I think you may be the ignorant one. I've noticed the post count does not increase on topics you start, so I've only ever posted a few discussions of my own.

I think that most people who "believe" and "say" these stereotypes know deep inside that it's wrong, they are just so afraid to be proven "ignorant" so they keep argue about it, they know they are wrong but it gives them false pride and superiority so they continue to "believe" in it no matter what. Ignorance and stupidity are mankind greatest enemy.

an interesting question to answer to-it definately gives an idea about a person by knowing his religion, appearance, culture etc....... and it has been a helpful tool to understand a person.... as every thing has advantages as well as disadvantages, the above mentioned parameters are being misuses,,,,, i think we should start from our self to appreciate the good and ignore the bad, well these things have come from centuries and due to globalisation which itself has many adv and disadv the things are changing now.... reply with your comments on this

I really dont believe in all those information. Just because you born in that region, religion it doesnt mean you will be the same way as some one was there in that region or religion.
Region, religion, appearance, cultural differences to recognise a person, not to hate him or insult him in front of anyone. I really dont like people who do that, i will never do that. I always respect people by their behaviour and attitude not with any other differences.

The post you started and the way you did it is bound to have some reaction from people that take it personally. The problem is not just in the very known big clichets that people share. The problem in itself is in the human race. Humans by natur are racists. They tend to want to belong in a special group. That behavior starts very early on in childhood, older kids don't hang out with younger ones. One person playing a particular sport will be snobby towards another person that plays smth else etc. That is a fact, people use this behavior in order to define themselves, find who they are, give answers to certain things that are completely absurd. I have lived racism all my life, have been critisized for being from the country i come from, have been denied education, jobs, opportunities for advancements, have lost friends and now I am losing my love. All because of racism.
Why should USA be different? Just because I am the person that has felt all the heat doesn't mean I don't understand. I ask all of you think hard, think very hard about what kind of cliches you have yourself, even if it is in the simple form such as, I'll never et caught dating a short guy or i'll never mary a divorced person or lawyers are sharks and the list goes on and on. The only way to fight this in a major scale is not allowing it to happen in a short scale, in our lives, within the household and truly be able to view someone as a person and not as a tag and a sign that sais You are this so therefore you are terrible.
If the rat ate the cheese what expression are you going to use? "the rats ate it" or "the rat ate it" it starts exactly from that.

Americans are not ignorant- they are just biased against everything that represents or stands for the islamic world....even when both their values-the American & Islamic cultures- are parallel to each other. When an arab thinks of a muslim, he automatically mistakes him for an arab. Now this is ignorance. Ignorance and prejudice can be a very explosive soup.

I am aware of the classifications that people are placed into, but do not really see any danger in this.
Like many others I enjoy blonde jokes or jokes about jewish people being mean and so forth, but this does not mean that I am naive enough to believe that these people really are dumb or mean.

that is so true.it is sad but no matter how educated you are people are always judgemental.they do judge you based on the way you talk, your looks, your background, your color, and your money and importantly your religon.it is sad but we keep on inventing more and more bariers to divide us than to seek to bring down the barriers that are already there!

we like our isms dont we? its just a sign of the simplicity and stupidity of human beings it is easier to generalise than to accept we are all different and have strengths and weaknesses for each one of us
