This is a hard one to know really but there is some sort of formula used to calculate the earnings. Firstly make quality responses to discussions which means more than a few words in your response or else you will not get as much money. If in fact a discussion is deleted as being inappropriate and you have responded to it, then you will lose money for that as your response will also be deleted. That has happened to many of us actually, even though we did give a quality response.
Also if you get a best response for a discussion, a positive (+) rating for either your response, a discussion that you start or a photo that you upload these will all increase the amount that you earn. Obviously if someone gives you a negative (-) rating this too will affect your earnings. I always rate the discussions and responses but I have never given everyone who responds to my discusions a rating, as that detracts from the value of it in my opinion.
I don't think that anyone can put a definate figure on what we receive for each post because of the forumla. I do know that I have not earned 5 cents per post but there might be others that have. Of course you will see all sorts of claims that people have made a certain amount of money, but your earnings are the best guide as that is what you are paid.
Good luck, continue to respond to discussions and start ones that will interest others, and you will do fine. :)

Thanks, I had a feeling that the ratings meant something. Also best responses are probably hard to get, I think that I like to respond and hope the person comments back to me so that I can get a full idea of their discussion.

Cool, I was hoping other new members would come here as well so they too can find out how mylot works a little better. Good to see you. Hope to see more of you around.
