Building my first Novel Using the Snowflake method

December 30, 2006 9:26pm CST
Using the snowflake method discussed in the previous post I will be attempting to build a novel. Randall Ingermanson says that "composting" is a must before using the snowflake method. I did my composting for an evening and then went to my friend's place and described the whole novel at length. He patiently listened to it. Thus a first glimpse of a completed novel formed in my mind. Then I bought a rough book and started writing and writing. After a great deal of matter was written I lay completely exhausted as I found that I was only halfway through the novel and still had a lot more to be written. The inner critic in me started pouring out sarcastic remarks like............."what a waste of time!"..........Who in their right minds will read the cliched hen'n'bull story????............and so I scanned what I had written thus far and I found glaring grammatical mistakes and most dishearteningly that it was absolutely boring and nonsensical.......I threw the book away...... six months later.......... The suppressed desire to write the novel sprang back at me with a fresh force. This time I recounted the novel to a group of enthusiasts for over an hour and they liked it! I felt a bit encouraged and so worked on the novel again. The novel is far from being finished, so feeling a bit bogged down I got another idea..............writing the novel online! That way someone or the other would read it as it is being composed........this thought alone is like a muse to me..................... So first I will start with the title and the chapters. After that I will start elaborating each chapter till the novel is finished. I think a novel, however bad it might ultimately turn out to be is indeed an accomplishment. And the I feel that the reward for finishing a novel is .....................finishing it!

Since I myself have tried writing and still do, can completely understand your thoughts about it. It is not as easy as it looks and I too get bogged down when I start editing before it is finished. I think I would feel the same way if I ever finished one. I have several half finished books laying around. By the way my writing instructor said to never throw any of your writing away. You never know when you'll need it. My story line is interesting. Even after months or even years when I pull one out and start reading what I have written it is like reading a new book. My problem is my characters all seem to be the same. I'm trying to learn how to make them each individuals. Give them their own little quirks and mannerisims. If I ever get that mastered I'll probably go back and finally finish one.

I did find my unfinished novel couple of days back and I am now appreciating whatever it was that I had previously written. Regarding the quirks and mannerisms......I think that is an important aspect. I saw shrek and found each character to have a style completely of their own. Maybe one should actually visualize the whole thing again and again till the characters in the novel come out alive on their own and you only have to record their thoughts and dialogues.........wouldn't that be wonderful! easier said than done............

Most certainly. I can hear and see them but when I try to get it on paper it loses something in the translation. I'm glad you found your manuscript. You keep working and someday I'll dig mine out and give it another go.

Sorry I meant to ask what is the snowflake method? I've never heard of it. Something like the snowball effect?
