Consumers should check the housing of a laptop thoroughly before buying a computer. One benefit of lifting the laptop is getting a feel for its weight, according to the Stuttgart-based magazine connect. Up to 2.5 kilogrammes is fine, but anything over three kilogrammes can become a burden during travel.
Sounds can also provide clues. There should be no creaking or groaning when pushing down on the computer, except possibly around the optical drive. Interior metal cylinders indicate a sturdy hinge for opening and closing the display. The keyboard should not have too much give. Individual buttons shouldn't have too much play. The mouse should easily reach the entire display. And the trackpad should not jam, a possibility even with the priciest models, according to the magazine.
