Traveling to Outer Banks

We're going to Outer Banks, NC the beginning of April. 2 other families are going with us. So, we'll need a decent sized beach home. We've never been before, so I was wondering if anyone has any tips or recommendations for this area? Is there a particular village that's better than the others? Any activities in the area that the entire family can enjoy? We were planning on just sticking around the beach home and hanging out on the beach.. but I didn't know if there were other things in the area that doesn't require lengthy driving.
