this is a proverb and it means that a real friend is one who will stay with us even in the time of diffculties and satisfy our needs.
so try to have a good friend as your best friend.

That's one of the dumbest things I ever heard. I am not being mean or insulting you at all.
A friend in need is a friend indeed.
I never really understood that phrase and use to always say a friend in need is a pest indeed.
Would you take the time to explain what it actually means.
If I were to think of a phrase that fit with helping needy friends I would say:
"A Friend Helping A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed"
