How can I get more heat out of my fireplace?

How can I get more heat out of my fireplace? I am burning hardwoods like oak and hickory and I always have the blower on but it still doesn't put out the heat I thought it would. Any suggestions from experienced fireplace owners. (the photo attached is of my fireplace before I got all the rock on.)

You might also want to see if the flue (chimney) needs cleaning if there is a lot of gunk in there it wouldn't give off as much heat.
