Does Anyone Here Play Volleyball?

I am a 50+ female, and I play power volleyball at least one a week. This is a great way to have fun while staying in shape. It doesn't require running (like basketball, which I hate!) and it's relatively easy to learn the basic skills needed to play. I also have asthma, but I have had no asthma problems while paying this sport. Many women are afraid of the ball (breaking a nail?), but once you learn how to hit the ball and play the game, it is SO FUN! Anyone else a (senior) volleyball player, or willing to give it a try?

I am not in my 50's, I'm 42, but I love the game of volleyball. I started playing in junior high school and continued through high school. My daughters now play in school teams and I gave coaching a try. I have bad knees, but I still love to play. I bought a cool outdoor volleyball net (no dangerous guywires to get caught in) this past summer, so we played out there whenever the mosquitoes weren't too bad.

I have also coached my children's teams when they played in church leagues. It was really fun to drill them and see them improve and build up confidence along with their skills. All five of my kids play (four now adults), and the youngest (15) plays high school ball.
When our family gets together for holidays or whatever, we always get in some volleyball. Last July 4th we played while everyone else was looking at fireworks!
BTW, we bought an outdoor net too, which we have used for both volleyball and badminton (another great game).

I love playing volleyball though I haven't played it in a while. I played in charity event this past summer and had a blast and wish that I had friends to play with or could find a league to join around here. If I could find people to play volleyball with, I would definitely play. I am not a senior.

Your comment about playing for charity reminded me of something - another type of volleyball they play here (for charity) in Idaho is MUD volleyball. Imagine it for a minute - yep! Just like that - slippery, gooshy mucky mud -but they say it's great fun. I haven't tried it, but I'd like to.
Whenever I move, the first thing I do is look for a volleyball venue. You can find folks to play with if you look. Try gyms and fitness clubs, your local recreation department, community colleges, and churches. We have always played at churches (the LDS Church is big on volleyball and all are welcome) and I have also signed up for volleyball classes at two different community colleges, very cheap and great for a fun workout. I did it for years.

Oh my, I love badminton too. I wish it were more available to play. Here it is more of an outdoor, casual, backyard summer sport. I played singles and doubles indoor badminton in college, and that really got me fired up about the sport. I like volleyball best, but would definately play badminton more often if I could. It's a blast!

So true... that's why I like playing the front row, especially. Nothing like a good KILL to make you feel better about - whatever - right? A good hard overhand serve helps too, espeically when it's an ace!

I love your comment "none of us likes to lose." I HATE to lose. Maybe that's why I like sports rather than gym workouts so much. I love competition! When I play volleyball (or any other sport) I don't even notice that I am sweating or getting a workout because I'm having fun, trying to win the game!

That was one of my Favourites when i was doing my secondary education. Of course even now i love to play it. it has been a while since i played.if i get a chance now i definitely play this game.
One thing i like a lot about is to win in this game everyone's contribution is required.I really feel that volleyball really helps improve team work.

Yes, so true! You can't be a hero in volleyball - it is imperative that you all play together as a team. In fact, a perfectly completed play involves three hits - the pass, the set, and the spike (or kill). This requires total cooperation and teamwork.
Thanks for your comment!

Absolutely! It's a great game for seniors 50+, even for beginners, I think. Of course, it's even better if you've played at a younger age, so you don't have to learn it from scratch. Once you get the various hits down, it's just a matter of making yourself move around (as opposed to just standing there, waiting for the ball to come to you). Thanks for your comment!

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by serviced. I have served! (ha!) I have also umpired youth volleyball games, but it is not easy to do. It's hard to see everything in a fast moving game of power hitters.

well, i'm not a senior, but I play volleybal once a week at the sport-club.
volleyball is about team work, so it's extra fun for me to play this sport, since I like to play with other peoples.
if you have scored a point, your whole team will be happy and that will encourage you to do your best and give your all.
it's not alot running (phew) and it's fun. a great sport for me. :D

That's great that once you're that old you can still play sports. And a good choice of sport for all of the reasons you already mentioned. I'm not that old yet but once I do get up there I'll consider it because it sounds great.

Wow! I wish I could play four times a week! Well, when our women's church league starts up again this month, at least I'll get to play more than once a week.

The only way to get better is to play. I've seen it myself, I've helped players who said they were not "athletic," or were "afraid of the ball," etc. Now, they play regularly and are greatly improved.

I enjoy watching it on TV but much prefer to PLAY! The best volleyball, of course, can be seen at the Summer Olympic games; both indoor and beach volleyball. Love it!

Find a group to play with, making sure at least someone knows the game well and can teach you how to hit the ball properly and some game strategies, and you will learn to love it. It's not a hard game to play once you know how, and it's not hard to learn either...

What to you mean "kiddios stuff?" Are you suggesting that volleball is a kiddy or kids' sport? Not on your life - watch Olympic or college volleyball sometime. PS I hate soccer! All that running, and for what? Usually a score of 1-0 or maybe 2-1. Arrgghhh!

I am only 26, but I love volleyball..played on a summer league for "grass" volleyball for the first time last summer..and actually i really liked it! the ground is hard enough you don't lose footing like in sand but soft enough when you dive, it doesn't really hurt (wearing pants that is!).
