I honestly can't give an answer for the majorty of American women, but I know that I was paid differnetly than men in my last job. My last job was as a retail manager for a locally, but nationally owned and ooperated discount store. Although we weren't supposed to dicuss what other managers made, we all did. After a while you become close with the other managers in your district and you end up taking. There were a couple of other women who were paid more than me, but not by much. There were even a couple who were paid less. The shocking part was what the men were making. Ther was one man who was making $150 more a week! It was the exact same position and we were all doing the exact same jobs! Needless to say, I don't work there anymore and I now work from home. I honestly couldn't look at my job in the same way anymore or my bosses. That, however, wasn't the reason that I quiet. I was a new mom and retail is kind of hard on parents, especially the management levels.

i always hear "equal opportunity employer" so i'm guessing they don't hire (or figure out pay) based on gender and race. that's just my guess though.
