Listening to radio is considered as an obsolete hobby now-a-days . we are more addicted to television , video & internet . only a few of us are interested in Radio . The portable Radio is the friend of common man . It is an adjunct to living . It forms a background for our normal day-to-day activities . It is not continuously listened to , but it plays while we work ; sings while we eat ; produces running sounds for desultory reading ; sings in the front when we drive ; ... melodifies the toilet ; and sees to it that there is no silence at any time . The discovery of radio added a huge dimension to the state of mass communication . Simultaneous broadcasting of the spoken and recorded word & music to millions of people in far flung places became a reality and a single big step in the direction of evolving a global village . Because of its radiation potentiality radio helps to rush news to people on the move as also to distant audiences . Reinforced by powerful transmitters on land and satellites in the sky , and the availability of cheap receiver sets , the radio has become the principal medium of mass communication , entertainment and distant education in developing countries . As a comparatively low cost spoken word medium , it has cut across the barriers of illiteracy . The portable radio receiver has become a constant companion for farmers , workers , travellers and sports lovers . It is a best companion for all those who are interested in news , music , drama , quizzes , farm bulletins , or views of eminent persons on public affairs .
