To help keep yourself safe follow these tips...
# Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, preferably water resistant, on all exposed skin, even on cloudy days. Don’t forget to put plenty of sunscreen on your ears. If you’re wearing a hat, leave sunscreen off your forehead to avoid it running into your eyes.
# Reapply sunscreen frequently, especially when sweating, and ensure areas such as ears, and under your nose are covered, particularly if you are involved in water sports.
# Where practical, wear a broad-brimmed hat or a cap. Choose a well-ventilated cap to prevent overheating. A visor can be a good option, but beware that your skin doesn’t get burned at the point where you part your hair.
# Sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes from the UV rays. The best kind are wraparounds, which stop the sun from hitting your eyes at every angle.
# Wear UV protective, tightly-woven clothing.
# Try to schedule training before 10am or after 4pm. At these times the sun’s rays are less damaging than in the main part of the day.
# At sporting events, take plenty of shade before and after the race. If you’re a spectator, take an umbrella to shelter under during the heat of the day.
