We were thinking of visiting Italy. We do not have a HUGE income and were thinking of staying in a Hostel instead of paying for really expensive hotels. What are they like? Should we forget it and try to find cheaper lodging other than a hostel?

Same here. I would like to travel to Italy and stay at a place where it is safe but won't charge us too much. The plan was to see the place and not to stay in the room. :)
I've notice that nobody has tried mentioning any hostel name yet... any suggestion please?

I was hoping for the same, some suggestions of hostels that are out there in Italy. I am not sure if we are going right away now-as I am pregnant and do not want to leave a baby behind. However, I still plan on going out there and would love some suggestions as to where we should possibly stay.

I don't know that I could ever saty in one after seeing the movie Hostel. The whole concept of that movie really creeped me out. I know it was fiction but it was crazy. I suppose for you it would be a good option since your budget isn't that large.

If you want to have a visiting tour to italy then the best comforts are in hotels i prefer also hotels for the tourists. And you should arrange some paarttime job there to afford them. By help of the hotel manager or with some guide.

I've never stayed in a hostel in Italy, but I have in Ireland, Scotland, England, France and Canada. I love them! They are cheap, if you do your research they are clean, and you meet a lot of interesting people. In some hostels, mostly youth hostels in my experience, you often have your own room and in others its a big bunk room where you can talk and meet people from all over. I say go for the hostel and have fun with it!!! But when finding a place to stay pay special attention to other travelers response on their experience.

You are right hostel is good than hotels. You feel better there and less expensive also. Lodging is also good choice.
