You could meet each other at a friends house for a first date to see if you want to be alone with each other. Have a cofee or dinner together first in public before going to one anothers house. To avoid awkward silences have a few open ended questions ready to bridge the conversation. Try not to talk about yourself to much. Try to change the subject if he/she moves to an area that you are not comfortable discussing yet. It is easy to do this with a quick comment on your surroundings then ask an open ended question.
