Maybe try giving the dog his food at the same time that you eat. But the dogs age should actualy help matters its been my experience that the older they are the better they listen.

This dog just seems to get worse as he ages. He has never listened and I would have guessed he would have slowed down by now, but he hasn't.

Maybe try feeding him at the same time?

Every time the dog begs just push it gently away and say "NO" very firmly. It won't stop over night but eventually i'm pretty sure it will get the message. Also NEVER give in and give the dog anything when it begs. It's reinforcing the behavour and telling the dog that it is acceptable. Good luck, you just need to be firm. :]

Also i don't agree with the point that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I think that giving your dog the odd treat from the supper table won't do any harm, it's all about moderation. I think it's cute that he begs you, hehe. How does he do it? Puppy dog eyes or whining? It would be a tough habit to break after 15 years (atleast I'm assuming he has been eating table foods for all this time)? I remember my grandma how she wuold always talk about the fact that they fed their dogs A LOT of food from the table..everyday even, and he lived a very long life :).

I don't know if there is any point addressing it now that he is 15 years old. :)
He has lived a long life and I don't know if you can teach an old dog new tricks. ha ha
My dogs beg. My KC has gotten to the point though, that if I am not looking at her, she will stare down my food as if willing it to fall on the floor. ha ha
But as soon as I look at her, she ducks her ears, lowers her head, and looks away as if she was just busted for trying to will the food.
My Bailey, however, will stare you down with his big Basset eyes hoping you will give in. Then he will crawl forward as if he just wants a better sniff. LOL And if you tell him NO, he will just look at you and then turn away and lay down to sleep. I guess that is the next best thing to food for him. hahahahaha

I would not let the dog in the room when you are eating or preparing food. If he doesn't see it then he can't beg for it. Even if he begs, don't give it to him. You're right, its not good for him.

We don't feed our dog any "people food" and we only feed him in his bowl at his meal times, so he knows that when we are eating, he doesn't get any of it. He never begs, so maybe you should give it a try??
Good luck!!

We have a black labrador puppy (14 months) and she LOVES food.
We have never fed her at table so she is quite good and doesn't beg but hovers around under the table ever hopeful that something might come her way.
But a 15 year old odg? Well just love him and spoil him for his last few years - too late to expect him to learn new tricks, as they say.
