How can you discover whether a mirror is true or if it's two-way?

We've often heard about the 2-way mirror but could never tell what one was. Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not? This is not to scare you, but to make you aware. A policewoman who travels all over the US and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on. When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror (they can see you, But you can't see them)? We've all heard of many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms, bathrooms, etc. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at? Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there IS A GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror. However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, FOR IT IS a 2-WAY MIRROR! "No Space, Leave the Place" So remember, every time you see a Mirror, do the "fingernail test." It doesn't cost you anything. I don't usually post this type of discussion and I am probably not going to get any points for it but I feel that it might have some impact and serve some purpose for the women in myLot and for the men to pass on to their mothers, wives and daughters. So please forgive me if you think I am taking up space or wasting your time.

Certainly you are not taking up space or wasting time at all gifana. This is the sort of thing that we all need to know about, and it is better to know than see ourselves on some TV somewhere. We do a lot of travelling, so I regularly use rest rooms along the way and have never really thought about this one at all, or at least never given it more than a passing thought. There are certainly some weirdos out there and I for one am very happy to know how to avoid becoming a victim of these types of people. Thank you gifana for caring and thank you for sharing. :)

My pleasure and in some way my duty. If this can help others in the future then I feel as if I have done my part. I haven't used any unknown restrooms since I received this but it is always in the back of my mind...what's left of it..hehehehe. Nice seeing you as always.

Gifana - this is absolutely awesome. I did go through your profile and I am impressed with your travelling. Interestingly enough, when you see my profile you would see that we have both been to many of the same countries. Lol! I had not even considered that a possibility in all my travels - and now that I think of it, how horribly naive I had been. As a result of this read, it is unlikely that I would be doing the fingernail test at the Mandarin in Hong Kong or the Willard in Washington DC. But surely I would be a bit more vigilant and a lot less naive. Cheers!

I would hope that in most of the 5-star hotels there are no two-way mirrors but you can never tell. I never gave it any thought either. So far I have had no reason to check this out but should I ever be in a place where the possiblity existed I would sure give it the finger test, that's for sure. Thanks for dropping by and for your input. PS: Were your travels mostly personal or business...just curious....The majority of mine were business related with a few side trips on my own. Have a nice day.

Business for Coffeemate, personal for me. Before the kids started school whenever possible, it was all of us - including the au pair. That gave me a lot of flexibility to see and experience things. Cheers!

Thanks for coming back. Wonderful when someone else pays the travel expenses isn't it. Unfortunately, I didn't always take full advantage of the experience....but what I have seen in this world is a hellava lot more than most people so I will never complain.

Passing out good information to make all of us aware of something is NEVER a waste of space or time. I'm going to remember "No Space, Leave the Place" for a long time to come. We always see videos that were made of people who were unaware they were being filmed in dressing rooms or restrooms, so this information could come in handy. Thanks for passing it on, and have a healthy and prosperous 2007.

Thanks Claudia and the same to you and yours for 2007. I like to see postings that have good advice and that one day might come in real handy. As for the videos that have been made I had never heard any advice given as how to avoid the situation. Always nice to see you.

With the way things are skidding downhill, information like this is never wasted. We can never be too careful. Thank you for posting it.
