No, I would not. Unless I knew the person very well. And if I did, when I stopped, I would lecture said person about hitch hiking and the dangers.
I have seen far too many movies when I was younger and the hitchhiker always ended up being some type of murder. Of course, you know something is going to happen when the character stops and you are talking to the tv, telling the character that it was the stupidest move and they might as well kiss their a$$ goodbye! LOL
Besides that, I was preached at by my father to never pick up a hitch hiker. That they were bad and could easier do something to harm me. Well, in this day and age, no has to really believe that. And anyone with half a brain and street smarts would know better to NOT hitch hike. So there is no way I would pick up a person that has their thumb stuck out for a ride!

ONce, right after I got married to my ex-husband, we were in the truck on our way back to where we would be living (we lived 700 miles apart when we married). There was a vehicle broken down on the side of the road and it was a woman alone with a child. We stopped. I wouldn't have had it been only me, but I'm glad we did. It was extremely cold outside and very wet and the woman was so very grateful that we stopped to help her when no one else would.
I also stopped once when I was alone, very recently, in fact. I saw this young man on the side of the road having car problems and I drove past him. I had the strangest feeling like I HAD to go back and help him. I can't explain it, but I did just that. I got off the freeway and jumped back an exit and got back on and pulled over. He had run out of gas. I took him to the closest gas station and waited while he bought a bit of fuel to get him up an exit and took him back to his car. I generally wouldn't do that, but I just felt like it was seriously something that I HAD to do.

I remember as a kid my dad would always pick up hitchhikers all the time. Now though it is different I will not pick them up at all. My son is now old enough to drive and I always remind him not to pick anyone up. Like you said you don't know what their intentions are.

Thank you for your response, I only hitchhiked once as a kid, I was on the Isle Of Wight and the buses stopped early, I was in a remote part of the island with no way to get back. This old couple gave me a lift back, I was so grateful, but that was back in the 80s, I wouldn't expect anyone to do that now, too much of a risk.

It is a sign of the times. It seems more dangerous to pick up stray people although under the right circumstances I would certainly consider giving a stranger a ride. One circumstance would be if they had car trouble...say a family or an elderly lady. But just some guy with his thumb out? Definitely not, I have heard too many horror stories to even consider it!

I have never picked one up, nor would I ever consider it. No matter what their gender is, it is a very sick society now. Sadly, but true. So, we have to be very careful.

No, I would never give a hitch hiker or even a stranger a ride for any reasons. I never did it back in the 1980's when it was so prevalent, so I certainly would never do it today with all that goes on in the world. It's sad that we fear for our personal safety when considering helping another person out, but it's the only smart choice. Male or female, it's too risky.

My boyfriend, while i was pregnant, saw a huge pregnant girl walking down the road...like so big you could tell she was about to bust, and he picked her up she had been walking a long time. But other than that i would never pick up a hitch hiker, ive heard way to many storys.

i only give a lift to people i know , as in neighbours who might be walking into town. other than that no way . there are few hitchhikers in ireland now . years ago it was THE way of getting about.apart from being attacked there is also the risk of being sued in event of an acccident. this has happened and a lot of people have stickers on their dash saying .. "passengers carried at their own risk". i dont know if the notices would stand up in a court of law but sure it might be a detterent for a would be suer

Yes, I also do not offer any hitch ride, if am driving my vehcile, even if it is asked for. Such is the enviornment now a days in big Metro cities, one never knows who is a genuine person and who is not. Therefore, it is better to be safe than feel sorry later. I may be having noble intentions of helping someone, however, the other fellow may not be having noble intentions like me.

I often stop to give hitch-hikers a ride. I myself have hitch-hiked when I have had vehicle trouble or got stranded somewhere with no dough in my pocket! I have never had any problems with any of the hitch-hikers. However, all the instances in which I have given people lifts have been in broad daylight. I never stop or ever slow down after dark. However, a friend of mine, a guy had a nasty experience when he offered a lift to a young man who seemed to be desperate to get somewhere in a hurry. However, the guy tried to get fresh with my friend who promptly gave him a trashing and dumped him off and sped away! He has never offered anybody a lift ever since then!

i would not give a space to a stranger in my car. i think its stupidity to pick up a hitchhiker. i had a friend who picked up a gang of girls and later he got beaten up on the way and the girls took away his car too! see, it is risky. i have hitchhiked myself before a couple of times when there was no choice left for me.but getting hitchhiked is risky too.

The sad thing is I would love to BUTTTTTTT with today's
society you cannot. It is really sad because I love to
help people. I am not racist so I would want to help
anyone who needs it. I see people that Hitch Hike a lot
and I am forced to drive by them. I feel bad but I am to
scared to stop and pick them up. I used to really feel
guilty about it but now as I pass them up I just say
God help that person and see that they get to were they
are going safely. I also say God help the person that
picks them up and let no harm come to them.
